Thinking about a change for the sake of it.

  • Must be as quick or quicker then my Teg both in a straight line and round the twisty bits
  • Reliable
  • Cheap(ish) to service
  • Capable of 30mpg+ on long runs
  • Involving to drive
  • Budget about £15k

Open to suggestions. I'm very biased to German and Japanese cars.

Dunno mate, I am running on harsh coilovers and had the interior stripped at one stage (had to put it back in as it was deafening and the ex lass wasn't too impressed).

I only use the car on track, driving to Tesco's or going to car meets. Doesn't need to be a daily driver as I walk to work.

As you say though, I think an Elise might be a little too bit extreme. However the thought of an Exige with a K20 conversion has crossed my mind...

Maybe a Clio 197 if your feeling brave, its not German - or Jap. But its still pretty quick.

A nice clio..

Or maybe somthing like an older S3? But maybe not as involving.

Drove an S3 and it's boring compared to the Teg. No for the Clio, it'll fall apart and I hate French cars.

I am very fussy! I've owed my Teg a lot longer then any other car and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when giving it some.

I would like a Black FD2, but AFAIK they don't make them yet and it's out of budget for one.

Scoob?

* Must be as quick or quicker then my Teg both in a straight line and round the twisty bits Tick
* Reliable Tick
* Cheap(ish) to service Tick
* Capable of 30mpg+ on long runs Tick - if you drive like a saint :)
* Involving to drive Tick, although probably not as much as the Teg, but still grin inducing
* Budget about £15k Easy with todays market

Hmm, I have thought about a Scoob. Only drove one, was the blob eye STI when I had my EP3. Just didn't do it for me if that makes sense. Same as my mates 330bhp Evo 8, great, but just doesn't do it for me. Might go down my local dealer and take one out. I do love the burble and they are cheap to get more boost.

Are the bottom end issues sorted?

E46 M3. doesnt quite tick all the boxes, but i think most things will be a compromise somewhere. could always strip it out for more fun!

Typical Car Snob ;)

Service a car properly and it will not fall apart.

194Bhp, 0 - 60 in 6.7ish secs - weighs around 1250Kg - Fun little car.

How about a Mini JCW - 210Bhp, go kart-esque handling etc.

I'm not a snob. My ex had a Clio 172, regularly serviced and looked after and that had no end of issues.

Don't like Mini's and I hate the engine whine.

And how on Earth can the 197 weigh more then the DC5?

jongeeone, the Teg is quite possibily the finest handling FWD cars out there, sorry but a clio is nowhere near as good.

Don't they have dodgy VANOS? I think the running costs would be too much. I have looked into an E46 M3 though. Not driven one but I love them.

dodgy vanos normally relates to the E36 evo iirc.

i think there was some issues with the earlier E46 M3's but it didnt effect many cars.

I'm not too sure really. I'm sure [TW]Fox will calrify shortly. You've got me thinking about an E46 M3 now though. Do none dealership stamps harm the resale if I buy one that's been done by a specialist?

Can you please explain how oil and filter changes stop trim falling off, etc etc?

Made me chuckle. Problems on the 172 were brake lines and mainly suspension related issues) split gators, driveshaft teeth wearing, CV joints etc.

Where did trim come into this?

He said his 172 had no end of issues.

I can't remember bringing interior into this at all?

Yea the interior on Renaults is awfully bad, i'll admit that.

*edit*

Stop trolling, got nothing usefull to say take it else where in all fairness.

No significant VANOS issues on the E46, their problem is Crankcase shell bearings (I think thats the wording) which affects early cars.

The E46 M3 is a significantly talented car - the are very fast, they handle well, they are involving, they are built well, etc etc but it's in a league above anything else mentioned in this thread. They *ARE* expensive to run - an Inspection II service can be up to £1000 for example.

Specialists don't save you an awful lot of money over main dealers in terms of routine servicing work - a couple of dealers are doing reasonably priced M Power servicing:

Is your M-power BMW 3 years old or more?
Then we can offer you some very special packages with great savings on labour and parts on scheduled servicing.

E36 M3 Inspection I £550
E36 M3 Inspection II £750
E39 M5 Inspection I £300
E39 M5 Inspection II £500
E46 M3 Inspection I £600
E46 M3 Inspection II £750

Remember, genuine cars need genuine care and parts for genuine performance. Costs are inclusive of labour, parts, oil and VAT and are valid until 31/12/08.

Not mine mate, was the lasses. Only none jap car I've owned was a Fiesta which spent more time then I would have liked in the dealers. Other cars have been 2 EP3's and my current DC5. Driven a lot of others though.
