Thinking about a change for the sake of it.

  • Must be as quick or quicker then my Teg both in a straight line and round the twisty bits
  • Reliable
  • Cheap(ish) to service
  • Capable of 30mpg+ on long runs
  • Involving to drive
  • Budget about £15k

Open to suggestions. I'm very biased to German and Japanese cars.

Dunno mate, I am running on harsh coilovers and had the interior stripped at one stage (had to put it back in as it was deafening and the ex lass wasn't too impressed).

I only use the car on track, driving to Tesco's or going to car meets. Doesn't need to be a daily driver as I walk to work.

As you say though, I think an Elise might be a little too bit extreme. However the thought of an Exige with a K20 conversion has crossed my mind...

Drove an S3 and it's boring compared to the Teg. No for the Clio, it'll fall apart and I hate French cars.

I am very fussy! I've owed my Teg a lot longer then any other car and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when giving it some.

I would like a Black FD2, but AFAIK they don't make them yet and it's out of budget for one.

Hmm, I have thought about a Scoob. Only drove one, was the blob eye STI when I had my EP3. Just didn't do it for me if that makes sense. Same as my mates 330bhp Evo 8, great, but just doesn't do it for me. Might go down my local dealer and take one out. I do love the burble and they are cheap to get more boost.

Are the bottom end issues sorted?

Typical Car Snob ;)

Service a car properly and it will not fall apart.

194Bhp, 0 - 60 in 6.7ish secs - weighs around 1250Kg - Fun little car.

How about a Mini JCW - 210Bhp, go kart-esque handling etc.

I'm not a snob. My ex had a Clio 172, regularly serviced and looked after and that had no end of issues.

Don't like Mini's and I hate the engine whine.

And how on Earth can the 197 weigh more then the DC5?

E46 M3. doesnt quite tick all the boxes, but i think most things will be a compromise somewhere. could always strip it out for more fun!

Don't they have dodgy VANOS? I think the running costs would be too much. I have looked into an E46 M3 though. Not driven one but I love them.

dodgy vanos normally relates to the E36 evo iirc.

i think there was some issues with the earlier E46 M3's but it didnt effect many cars.

I'm not too sure really. I'm sure [TW]Fox will calrify shortly. You've got me thinking about an E46 M3 now though. Do none dealership stamps harm the resale if I buy one that's been done by a specialist?

Can you please explain how oil and filter changes stop trim falling off, etc etc?

Made me chuckle. Problems on the 172 were brake lines and mainly suspension related issues) split gators, driveshaft teeth wearing, CV joints etc.

Where did trim come into this?

He said his 172 had no end of issues.

I can't remember bringing interior into this at all?

Yea the interior on Renaults is awfully bad, i'll admit that.

Not mine mate, was the lasses. Only none jap car I've owned was a Fiesta which spent more time then I would have liked in the dealers. Other cars have been 2 EP3's and my current DC5. Driven a lot of others though.

No significant VANOS issues on the E46, their problem is Crankcase shell bearings (I think thats the wording) which affects early cars.

The E46 M3 is a significantly talented car - the are very fast, they handle well, they are involving, they are built well, etc etc but it's in a league above anything else mentioned in this thread. They *ARE* expensive to run - an Inspection II service can be up to £1000 for example.

Specialists don't save you an awful lot of money over main dealers in terms of routine servicing work - a couple of dealers are doing reasonably priced M Power servicing:

Bloody hell!

My Teg costs me £90 for a minor and £190 for a major service. Interestingly enough, the lad I bought my DC5 from bought an E46 M3 to replace it with. I remember him calling me up saying his rear discs were knackered and had been quoted £800+ to get them replaced!

What band do they come in with the new (rip off) tax rules?

Which is kinda my point - 10% saving just doesn't seem worth it.

I think a £15k M3 is the car you buy if you have a £17-£20k budget.

I would just have to take a small loan out to cover the remainder which isn't too much of an issue. I'll go up to £20k if need be for the right car but would prefer not to.

It's only a thought at the moment, I'd have to shift mine and DC5's aren't selliing well at the moment.

Even my 'lowly' 530i costs more than to service!

Super rip off to the max band. £440 a year!

Honda would charge me more, mine gets done at a Teg specialist.

£440, not good! Teg is PLG! :D

take a look at this one:

good colour combo and low mileage with some nice extras, i am sure he would go below 15k with all the extras given the current climate.

and yes expect whatever value in mind you had for the DC5 to be too high in the current market!

Have to register on there.

I thought that you were looking at S2000s?

Still am. Not sure if I could live with the small boot though. I borrowed one of a mate for a short while and loved every minute of driving it though.

Not my style mate. Great car, but I just don't like them.

Am really thinking of either a S2000 or E46 M3 now. Will have to drive the M3 but how likely will my local dealership be to let me out in one?

I don't think you could go wrong with an S2K really. You'd get more toys with an E46 but I doubt the driving experience will compare with the rawer DC5 you're used to where the S2k will. Then again, if you want a vast change the M3 will probably be the ideal option for the money and is certainly quicker in a straight line.

I suppose it's a case of getting some time in either cars.

Also, did you sell your boot build?

I know mate hence me wanting to drive one first. Only thing about the S2K that puts me off is the ferocious reputation it has. My Teg is very good in the wet and I'm sure to do something stupid in the S2K. Plus the whole practicality thing, the DC5's boot is huge and has served me well.

Boot build is still in the car mate.
