just purchased an asus zonar ds, a review stated that it doesn't support dolby digital encoding.

what exactly does that mean?

As you know the DS lacks the Dolby Labs technologies that most of the the rest of the Xonar range has. This includes Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker, as well as the DDL encoding.

The DDL encoding refers to Dolby Digital Live, which encodes 5.1 so it can be sent over a digital (optical or coaxial cable). Your card has DTS connect which basically does the same thing but with DTS, rather than Dolby Digital. As long as you're using analogue speaker connections, or you have a DTS capable receiver, there is no difference when it comes to connecting speakers.
