hi i am going to get new motherboard was thinking og the p5k premium, but not so sure , i dont want to upgrade again for about 2 years after this upgrade, so was thinking of maby ddr3 motherboard or should i stick to ddr2?, i know ddr3 is still expensive but want it to be future proof, so should i go for ddr3 or 2??

i say stick with DDR2, it is most likely your next major upgrade will be to another cpu socket which may only support ddr3 and ddr3 maybe around current ddr2 prices are now anyway.

I'm in the same situation as you, i don't upgrade often, and am building a new system to replace my old AMD64 3700+...

For this reason, i have decided that i'm going to get a DDR3 motherboard and ram, as it should last longer than a DDR2 combo... Sure the prices are high now, but i won't be upgrading it for 2 years, so it's just a matter of biteing the bullet now... ;)

stick with ddr2, with the prices can get 4gb which will last you 2 years, even if its pc8500 that should be good til the next socket change.

wait till the new intel socket later in the year then jump to DDR3 would be my advice. Doesn't really offer any performance gains unless you want to spend really silly money.

DDR3 is about 3-4 times the price of DDR2, sometimes more!! You'd still spend less money by upgrading to a DDR2 board now, and then upgrading to a DDR3 board in a year when DDR3 has dropped in price.

Totally up to you really.
When I upgraded a few months ago I moved to the DDR3 platform - and that was when DDR3 memory really was silly money.

I certainly don't regret the move and as we move on chipsets will stop supporting DDR2.
X48 will offer some DDR2 based boards, but P45 may well only be DDR3.

The position I'm in now should allow for a more gradual upgrade in the future - just motherboard and CPU rather than all 3 of the main components.

Just don't go into a DDR3 purchase thinking it is going to offer you any major performance increases.

There's always the likes of the Foxconn X38A. That has both DDR2 and 3. I'm sure there's a few others as well. So your getting an X38 chipset that'll work with your current mem and when DDR3 drops in price just replace it with that.

There is no point in getting DDR3 at the moment.

At current speeds and timings it offers no performance gain over PC8500.

By the time DDR3 has become more refined and faster you will have cheaper kits and faster chipsets to take advantage of it.

You say you are buying it to future proof your system, You aren't really future proofing it are you. You are buying 1st generation DDR3 for how much? £300?

What will you be thinking next year when faster cheaper DDR3 comes out?

It is impossible to future proof really as in two years time who knows where hardware will be.

I would stick with DDR2 as should perform as well as an early DDR3 board.
In two years time when you upgrade then DDR3 will have matured and should be a better option.

Think about how long DDR lasted, and how long it and DDR2 both lived side by side.

Stick with DDR2, it's not going obsolete any time soon.
