Hi Guys

Ive got a problem i hope you can help me solve. Ive got 4 gig of OCZ Nivida SLI ready ddr2 800. My systems runs lovely with this, however Im about to start working with virtual machines. I therefore bought another 2 gig of ram without thinking about dual channel etc, Ive also got a 1 gig stick lying around somewhere. Therefore which will be the most beneficial 4 gig dual channeled 128bit or 6 or 7 gig in single channel 64bit mode?

Look forward to hearng from you.

Cheers

Andy

you should be able to run 6 gig dualchan:

make sure the 2*2gb sticks are paired together (eg are one DC pair) and the 2*1gb sticks make a second pair, eg:
chan 1 = slots 1,2 chan 2 = slots 3,4
currently running 2 gig sticks in slot 1 and 3 for dual: add 1 gig sticks to 2 and 4 to maintain dual. you would lose dual if you ran 2 gig sticks in 1,2 and 1 gigs in 3,4 for example as the channels are not matched.

this is assuming you have 2*2gb and 2*1gb sticks

if you have 3*2gb sticks, its best to pickup another the same as your new and run above, elsewise - since your gonna have to run single, you may as well put everything you ccan in.

as for whats better, 4gig dual or 7 gig single - depens how much memory your using; load up all your VM's to the worst case you would use them irl, if your hitting the page file a lot: then 7gb single will be best. if your still within the available 4gb of ram and not paging, then 4gb dual will perform better.
