ddr3,any point yet?

I can't see it really.

The only benefit I see is that they will provide higher speeds by increasing the prefetch cache to 8 bits and dropping the clock speed even further than what they did with DDR2.

This means they will reach stupid speeds well beyond the current breed of CPU bus speeds. The new 333MHz FSB (1333Mhz effective) only requires the minum of DDR2-677 (PC-5400) which is a long way off the top DDR2-1066(PC2-8500) so I can only see DDR3 as a bit of an overkill.

Just read that thanks. All hardware becomes obsolete eventually.. The 8800 series will be obsolete in 12 months or so. So too will be a lot of other hardware and DDR2 is likely to follow this trend. However, until some decent benchmarks are issued it's too early to speculate. At the end of the day, is DDR3 just specialist/overclockers RAM or is it for the mass market?

from that article it looks like you may as well either buy some really cheap ddr2 and wait for ddr3 to drop in price or bite the bullet and buy it now.like you say be nice to see some more benchmarks first

Thought Id jump on this thread and ask when we might see DDR3 prices come down since there seems to be quite a few boards (starting with the P35 chipset) coming out now that are overclocking monsters and Intels readying to bring a family with 1333Mhz FSBs (well 333Mhz quad pumped)...

Im still on DDR1 on a S939 AMD system so it makes sense for me to jump ship straight to DDR3 otherwise I might get stuck on DDR2 (which hasnt really lasted that long - but you could see the signs from the start). It might mean Ill pay a bit more than Id want, but Id rather not pay through the nose looking at the prices now (really would want 2x2GB if possible).

Hoping to u/g at the end of the year realistically and want some top components...

Cheers

I think you need to look up the word 'obsolete' lol!

Hell, AGP still isn't obsolete yet. ;)

DDR3 will fall in prices and get better latency-wise, and is already doing this. However massproduction and very low prices will only be there when the factory-upgrades are done, when P35 chipset production is boosted, and people start flocking to it, remember, many P35 chipsets are still DDR2 ever. I predict that the many influx of DDR3 sticks will be when AMD back it, and not before.

I use DDR3 and as thats all my board supports. I don't want to change it for a few years and will want to have a decent PC for a few years. I guess I'm saying, when I built it a 4 months ago, I wanted maximum future proofing. I can't use DDR 2 on this board, unlike some multi-type ones.

I had similar feelings a while back and decided to stick with S939, adding an extra gig of RAM (from 1gig to 2gig) to tide me over. However a couple of months ago I decided to bite the bullet and go for it as DDR2 prices were really low. I picked up 2gig of Corsair PC5400C4 for £44inc brand new to go with a budget C2D setup (P5N-E, E4300), figuring that even if it does get phased out it is still not that much money to sink.

In fact come to think of it, I can't remember EVER spending as little as £44 on RAM for my primary rig (obviously I've picked up little odds and ends in the past to upgrade older rigs). And I've been buying RAM since the days of SIMMS.

The way I see it, I'm unlikely to be doing a proper upgrade (mobo+cpu) until 2009 so I won't worry too much about DDR3 until then. I'd imagine that in the long term, DDR2 prices will continue their recent upward trend as production is phased out in favour of DDR3.
