DDR3 with a Core2

I'm looking at a few upgrade options and have settled on an Asus P5Q-E, but have also come across the P5Q3. I was just thinking ahead to when I'll move to Core i7 (way too expensive at the mo) and was wondering how getting a P5Q3 and dropping in two sticks from a 3-stick low voltage DDR3 set would cope. Any ideas/experiences?

I went from a Striker extreme (680i DDR2) to a striker II extreme (790i DDR3) with my Q6600 at 4GHz.

TBH there was little difference other than in benchmarks. Don't get me wrong it was quick but I'd either:

- keep what you have and carry on saving for i7

OR

- Stick a fat pile of some quick stuff like the Kingston on this week only for now./

Seriously mate, If all you are going to upgrade is your Mobo & RAM, it won't be an upgrade....more of a side step with just a smidgen more performance.

Flog the Corsair and stick this in would be your most cost effective/ performance upgrade ATM:

Or Put a quad core chip in it. (again, only major gains would be in benchmarks) Games wise, your X1800 card will be more of a bottleneck than your CPU at the moment anyway.

Hope this helps mate ;)

It does, ta. Must update the sig actually; it's a 4870 I'm using at the mo, not an X1800 and I am happy with the performance of my desktop at the mo. Yes, it would definitely be a sidestep, performance wise, but I knew that; it's a matter of spreading the cost of upgrading to Core i7 in a year or so rather than boosting performance right now.
Prolly best to explain myself; I'm upgrading my PVR box from an old Skt.7/Athlon-M setup to Core 2, and the plan is to get a new board for my gaming rig and cascade the BFG 680i from my gaming rig to the PVR box (already have spare DDR2 and a CPU for that). I was just trying to figure if I could get a DDR3 board for the desktop and use Core i7 compatible DDR3 with it's current E6600 and then when it comes to move up again, I wouldn't face the expense of new cpu, mobo, /and/ RAM all at the same time.

Hmmmmmm. Core i7 reall needs 3 sticks though mate - and it must be the low (1.65V) voltage. DDR3 dual channel kit often run a lot higher voltage so it'd be no godd for core i7 anyway if you bought it ;)

The P5Q3 is a bit dodgy for memory support iirc.

Agreed.
