DDR3 won't run at rated speed when I overclock Q6600

Hi, not sure what section's best so let's try here...

As per sig I'm running a S775 board and CPU and I decided I wanted 8GB of RAM for BF3. The board doesn't support 8GB of DDR2, so the only way for me to achieve this, was to buy DDR3.

I can post at 3.6GHz / 1.4V indicated with a FSB of 450, however I have to run the memory 1:1 at 900MHz in order to get it to work at standard timings, when the memory is rated at 1333MHz.

Does anyone know if this is likely to be a limitation of the board and something I'll have to put up with? The P35C-DS3R supports 1333 memory / FSB so I'm slightly confused as to why I can't run a higher divider on the RAM. There aren't that many people I can find running DDR3 in a P35C and that have encountered this problem, so I'm more hoping for some general advice on what might be going on.

I haven't played with the NB / FSB voltages or the RAM voltage. I have the latest BIOS. The RAM is Corsair XMS3 1333.

Got that the wrong way around, it supports 4x2GB DDR2 or 2x2GB DDR3. I'd be happy that it was working at all, the difference between 900/1333mhz shouldn't be much.

Officially, yes, but 8GB of DDR3 does work:

So anyway, what I should have said was that it doesn't support 4GB DDR2 DIMMs. So I should have bought two more 2GB DDR2 DIMMs, but I didn't as DDR3 was cheaper (£28 delivered for new XMS3) so I chose that hoping it would work...which it does, I just can't post with the memory anywhere near the rated speed.

If the consensus is that there's nothing I can do about it and it doesn't make much difference anyway, then I'll stick at ~900MHz :).
 
I actually have a similar setup to yourself.

I've just put a Q6600 SLACR into my GA-P35C-DS3R. I'm running 4gb (2x2gb) of Corsair XMS3 1333mhz.

I've only just tested it at 333x9 (3ghz) stock volts (1.25v VID). I'll have a play at higher fsbs and see what I come up with.

Have you tried lowering the multiplier to see if it makes any difference?
 
Hi, it's good to hear from someone with a similar setup. I suppose the question is whether or not the board copes much better with 4GB DDR3 compared to the (officially) unsupported 8GB of DDR3.

Yeah I've tried lowering the multiplier to 8 to come up with 400x8 = 3.2GHz with the memory running 1:1 at 800MHz.

So my plan now is to upgrade from F10 BIOS to F12 (although my OP states that I have the latest BIOS, that was a mistake and in fact I'm running F10) and format the PC to try and resolve the sleep resume issue.

If all else fails, I'll probably sell the DDR3 and look for 4 x matched 2GB DDR2 DIMMs, or just run it at stock (boo).

I also have a problem with video not returning after I resume from S3 sleep whenever I overclock, forcing a hard reboot at which point the boot cycles and I end up with the clock settings back at 2.4GHz. I recently changed GPUs from nVidia to ATI, and I made the mistake of not uninstalling the graphics drivers before swapping the cards so I'm now left with a load of nVidia entries in my programs list.

Thank you for the links but that list of supported RAM is horribly out of date. For example, not a single 2GB DIMM is listed for speeds of 800 MHz and 1066 MHz.

Sorry, set it to 800 then clock it to 1066? So set it to 1066 then? Currently I'm running at the stock CPU speed of 2.4GHz with memory at 800MHz 1:1. Seemingly this is the only way to get it stable.
