DDR3 - worth it yet?

Does anyone think that DDR3 is worth the price premium currently? I am just looking at a new build and was considering a DDR3 mboard for the long run. This would mean i would only put in 2 gig though until prices came down, as opposed to 4 gig of DDR2 i would put in.

I will be planning to overclock a Q6600 or similar on water and a good graphics card also. Would the DDR3 pose a problem for overclocking?

At the moment DDR3 really doesn't offer that much over DDR2.
The bandwidth of DDR3 is higher - however no CPU at the moment requires it, so its wasted.

I did a rebuild just as the X38 chipset was released and due to a good deal on some DDR3 RAM at work I went for 4GB (4x 1GB) of DDR3 memory.
It is one less thing to worry about at the end of the year when I consider upgrading again and this time I expect it will be DDR3 or nothing.

With DDR2 prices at rock bottom right now it really is difficult to justify the extra cost of DDR3.

and if you buy ddr3 dual channel then when nahlem (spelling) comes out most boards will be tri-channel and faster than current ddr3. so you upgrade again IMHO its a waste of money till you upgrade to nahlem.

it may be tri0channel but most sticks will still work like that anyway, since you could get a lot of unmatched pairs of ddr1 and run them in dual channel, i;ve had ones from 266 and 400 running in dual channel at 266 speeds ofc....although i found them in a work machine working like that lol.

Although speeds will increase somewhat and timing will get down probably not that much by the end of the year though. If you can spare the cash for some decent DDR3, go for it. If your price concious then go for DDR2. Bear in mind 4GB of DDR2 will run nicer in the mean time than 2GB DDR3

Tbh why pay now for slow DDR3 lets say 200 quid if lets say you can get now DDR2 for ~60 and then by next upgrade when DDR3 becomes more common get a set of FASTER new DDR3 for another 60-100.

Thanks for the inputs guys, think DDR 2 gig more for now and overclock E6300 and 150 quid new gfx card then complete new pc in a year or so with water cooling
