DDR400 in Abit NF7-s v2?

Hi All,

According to my Abit nf7-s v2.0 mobo manual, it supports:

- 3 dimms ddr 200/266/333
- 2 dimms ddr 400
- supports ddr400 only when using an add-on VGA card (NF7-M)

I currently have 2x256 modules in there and they are running at 200mhz fsb.

It seems even value ocuk memory is DDR400.

Does the manual mean that it doesn't support the speed of the faster memory? Or does it mean that it won't work? I.e. can I put in DDR400 and just run it at 200mhz?

Also I seem to remember there is some benefit from running the memory in pairs. If I go for all three slots and 1GB total, that's better than two with 512 total?

Thanks,
Philip

200mhz is ddr400. Stick to 2 sticks in dual channel if you can rather than 3 sticks as that means your board will drop to ddr333 (166mhz). From what is sounds like you are thinking about upgrading to 1gb and so going for a pair of ddr400 2 x 512mb sticks would be your best action

Thanks. That makes sense now.

What is MM?

The Members Market, its part of the forums where you can buy and sell second hand goods.

You have your trust account enabled so you should be able to see it.

You can put faster memory in it and run the memory underclocked if you want. Mine is pc4000 which should run at 250mhz but i have it clocked down to 225mhz even tho cpu and mb are overclocked at that speed.

Ah MM! :)

I was just thinking about upping the FSB again. If I'm going to get a new memory pair, may get a faster one. Do you know where a typical nf7/barton 2500 tops out? Which gives first?

Thanks,
Philip

If the barton is multiplier unlocked you won't be limited by the board for max CPU speed. THe NF7 will do around 225-235mhz FSB, so your RAM may limit you.

Just find the max FSB your RAM/mobo will allow and tweak the multiplier to suit :)

It is indeed unlocked. Great. Thanks for the help guys. :D

Thats good, you should easily get 200x11, nearly all barton 2500s did 2.2Ghz. Then you can always tweak the FSB up to get some nice gains in memory bandwidth :)

Is your Ballistix Cas3, and assuming its 1 gig modules? "Balistix PC4000 (2.5-2-2-11)"
As I've noticed the NF7-S doesn't like 1gig sticks at Cas2, Windows is unstable with Cas2.

The ballistix i have are 2x512MB sticks. they are rated at cas2.5 but thats at 250MHz which obviously i cant quite hit!! They run happily at 2-2-2-11 upto about 220Mhz but after that i have to drop to 2.5-2-2-11. Had no problems with them at cas2 at all though below 220fsb. had to up the voltage though to 2.9v (2.8v stock) to keep tight timings.

Saying that they have just died on me. I was as getting corruption and bsod all the time even during installing xp. Changed back to old ram and all is well again.....except it cheapo cl3 ram. Luckily they come with a lifetime warranty so will be able to get them replace easily. Lots of threads about the 1gb sticks failing knocking around
