Dead 360 - Time for a PS3 ?

My 13 month old 360 is dead :(. The dreaded 3 red rings has got me. I sent it to a company in Dundee to be repaired but apparently it's beyond repair. So it's time to replace it. The question is, do i risk getting another 360 or get the PS3 ? The failure rate of 360's seems to be very high. I know people who are on their 3rd/4th console. So far, the PS3's seem to be a lot more reliable.

I'm on my second 360 and this one sounds like it will go before this year. It keeps scratching my disks, the power supply is too big and it's too damn loud. If you have bought anything from the marketplace and you have more than 1 profile on your 360 then you can't play stuff that the other person has bought from that profile after you have a new console. I have had to phone up Microsoft and I still haven't had it sorted out, their DRM is a joke.

Also, I think later this after all the stock that Microsoft has put into stores which has still not sold out yet since Christmas, will be replaced with more reliable and quieter 360's.

It's up to what you want to play. The PS3 is a better piece of hardware, it's more stable and it's certainly not as loud. You can easily add music and videos through memory sticks and USB keys and if you have an HDTV it's a great Blue-Ray player.

Personally I think there are more original titles coming this fall on the PS3. Apart from Viva Pinata and Oblivion I haven't played anything on my 360 that is fresh and something that could not have been done last generation, excluding the graphics.

However if you want to play Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo 3 this year then I guess you should buy a core. Though personally I think the PS3 has more appealing games for the future, the 360 is overloaded with shooters and racers. There isn't enough diversity yet but maybe by E3 you will have a better look on things as there are new IPs expected to be announced by Sony.

Get a PS3

Just for Blu-ray Alone :) The games are coming starting with R6 Vegas sooon
Blu-Ray can wait it won't replace the need for games.

Vegas? Played that 9 months ago, I mean seriously the PS3 needs exclusive not more shoddy ports. (and yes Vegas is yet again worse on the PS3 according to IGN)

Edit: I couldn't help it, I'm the mood for writing :p

I believe this time next year the userbase for the PS3 will be much larger, as there will be a better choice of software, the console should be cheaper, and the majority of 360 owners will be fed up of the consoles reliability and thus will head towards the PS3 rather than the 360.

Once PS2 gamers are prepared to purchase the PS3 whether it be for MGS4 or Final Fantasy that makes them take the jump, the userbases of the PS3 in Japan and Europe will start rising signifcantly. You can't deny it, over here it is Sonyland.

The reason the Wii is so hot is because of its price, when both the 360 and the PS3 fall in price I think the Wii will start to decline. PS3 will dominate Japan and most of the 360 userbase will be in America, much like the first Xbox but this time there wont be as much of a gap between it and the PS3.

Here however people love the Sony brand, I think in Europe the PS3 is what people want. It has already sold a million at the price it is at and without a big catalogue of games that does show you what it means in Europe.

I had a Wii and sold it, I'm not interested in any of the games coming out this year for it. Zelda TP was disappointing, it was like playing Ocarina of Time all over again. There was hardly anything new. I think Nintendo haven't delivered when it comes to beating their old 2D games. I would still have more fun playing Metroid, Mario and Zelda for the SNES than Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine or Zelda TP / WW.

Woah, I'm finished for now :p

I'm unconvinced Sony are going to touch Microsoft after this christmas, they won't be back on top for a long time or at all.

Then you are forgetting Japan completely. I don't think you realise how big Metal Gear and Final Fantasy is over there and how little the 360s are selling. Once the price drops gamers that bought a Wii that want the HD visuals and a machine that's much better will buy a PS3. Sakaguchi won't be enough to save the 360 in Japan.

I wasn't talking about Japan, don't live there. ;)

It's tough. The 360 hardware is when it works is excellent; the problem being this console is heading straight for the monikor of least reliable piece of hardware for all time. The PS3 isn't perfect though, I read daily reports of them getting stuck on 'top fan mode' which apparently makes it louder than a 360 (I know, it doesn't sound plausible) and that blutooth controllers lose connection once every couple of hours on PS3forums.

Despite me wanting to say get a PS3 I just can't justify it though. MS are surely working hard (I mean c'mon this is MS) on ironing out the manufacture problems and have by far the lions share of the games this year. As the guys have said you should have kept the harddrive and bought a new core or taken the 3 years warranty.

Even in this gaming drought (brought on as I've played most the 360 titles I wanted to and I'm a bit sick of fps) I still can't see why anyone with a 360 at this time would buy a PS3. I even bought a DS to keep me sane and I still can't see a reason to get one. I mean really, are Motorstorm / R:Fom worth £200 each?

So it doesn't matter about other countries then, just here...

Well there are so many people who love their PS2 here who have not made the next gen jump. People are waiting for the PS3 to get more games and drop in price, they want to play the new installments of games which were on the PS2. People love Sony over here, don't ask me why. I'm surprised people still stick by them the way the treat Europe but it's just the way it is.

Ain't going to happen.

90% of people who bought a PS2 did so based on price. Brand loyalty can only take you so far (as it should.)

When the 360 Premium is £199 with Halo 3 and PGR4 and the PS3 is still £350 those that have been sitting on the fence will only go one way. (Whether that's right or wrong).

Where's the evidence that people are sticking by Sony despite the way they treat Europe? Or is it just a gross presumption on your part?

Sony cant afford to make price cuts, they're already at an operating loss with regards to the console and any further cuts would seriously undermine their profits with the console division performing as badly as it is. Sony were expecting to shift a lot more units and as that hasn't come to fruition i doubt there will be any significant price cuts over the next year.

Both, they have already sold 1 million units here despite no games and its current price. I think thats evidence but most people who I know usually do say they are waiting for a PS3.

Actually the PS2 is still selling a lot of consoles a month, if they position it as a console to compete with the Wii then they could easily be making more money.

I had a 360 and theres no doubt about it, some great games on it at the moment, however they are way too unreliable, a ticking time-bomb, the build quality is terrible.

I am now thinking about a PS3, not just yet because there are no games that interest me, but when the AAA titles arrive, MGS, GTA, FF etc. etc. They seem to be of a way better build quality than the 360, quieter, wifi and blue ray out of the box.

I think it all depends on what type of games interest you, i'm sick of FPS's at the moment and love jRPG's especially the Final Fantasy series, so probably makes sense for me to go the Sony route.

Still undecided ;)

They are better build quality (PS3's), eventually Microsoft will sort the 360's out I suppose, I can live with it for now.
Only on my 3rd 360. (3rd because I sold my last which lasted since launch and still works)

We must remember though the PS3 has some kick *** accessories. :)
