Hi

My 8800 has perished and I am looking for a replacement. I have an Asus P5B mobo and have heared that there are now different PCIe verions, 1.x,2.x and so on.

I have not got a clue what card to get but I'd rather stick with nVidia. I am not too bothered about gaming, wioth only Mass Effect 2 getting my attention on the PC.

the rest of the spec:

C2D6600, 4 Gig ram.

Now, if I do get a flashier card, will I need to upgrade my mobo? That is a last resort as the current spec has served me very well. I don't bother with overclocking and so on.

Thanks for any help.

Budget ?

Might as well try the oven trick...

Otherwise probably the 5770 - its the 8800GT of this generation but without being VRAM crippled at higher res.

Putting a video card in the oven is a bad idea. Its poisonous and will coat your oven with god knows what.

Uh... thanks :p

I may try the 5770 but that means ****** around with drivers. I have noticed, from the boards, there are 'issues' with some ATI drivers. I only want the thing to work:)

Or am I way behind the times?

Whats your budget? Mass Effect 2 will probably require a half decent card... but you won't need DX11, etc. so sticking with nVidia won't be a problem in that regard.

I'm not a fan of ATI drivers personally - but - I do PC builds for family, friends, etc. and since about end of Jan or so 2009 ATI drivers have been pretty much fire and forget - seemed to just work and no ones come back complaining about problems with them. Before that I would have said they were a bit problematic.

Cheers for the replies. I don't often game now, especially on the PC, and therefore don't keep up on latest tech. However, ME2 should be goood and as I originally got the first on the PC I may as well continue with the second on the PC, unless it is dire.

Budget? Well, whatever. No more than £200 really. I'd rather it was quiet, or at least very quiet when throttled down.

The 5770 looks reasonable. I will have a look around for that, cheers.
