Dead CPU?

To cut a long story short I have got a i7-2600k to replace my 2500k and I'm afraid its DOA the PC doesn't seem to post. All components work fine as the PC was being used before the swap. The motherboard BIOS is up to date, I've cleared the CMOS using the jumper then taking the battery out for 30mins. I then removed the graphics cards and checked for any damage to the CPU socket. After that didn't work I put the i5 back in and it booted up fine. I'm fairly sure the i7 is dead but as I've had a lot of trouble getting it I dread the thought of returning it and thought I'd post here in a last-ditch attempt to try and sort it. Any help is really appreciated.

Yh handy to have the stock cooler,is your BIOS fully upto date? It should still work but best to try everything, try an overnight cmos battery removal also,if it still won't work try raising rma/replacement with Intel themselves rather than place of purchase

I've seen good things with Intel rma

I got it from that high street second hand electronics shop that randomly plays metal music all the time. Not sure if I can say a name but I'm sure you know the one I mean. I've emailed them this morning saying that its faulty but I know I will be lucky to get a reply today. Unfortunately I went to sleep before taking the battery out but when I tried the i5 again the BIOS had been reset so resetting it again shouldnt make a difference should it?

I'm not surprised it was dead if you bought it from them in honesty, I don't think they even test PC parts before selling them. Despite what they might say.

Good luck getting it all straightened out. I don't suppose you have any other compatible systems at your disposal which you can test the CPU in? Just to make completely sure?

Also with regard to the heatsink being awkward to keep re-fitting, when testing CPU's I just put on the TIM and sit the heatsink on the chip. No point mounting it properly as long as there is contact really. You're not going to put any load on it. :)

I've never used them before but I noticed on their website I could swap a 280x for an i7 and 8gb of ram which seemed worth it. Regretting it now though as its been a real hassle getting the i7 in the first place, defiantly the last time I will use them. The processor still has warranty with Intel so I might try them if the shop keeps messing me around. Oh and no unfortunately its the only 1155 board in my house the other pc's are all still 775 and I'll have to start doing that I had the backplate drop into the pc a few times last night it was quite stressful.

deal directly with intel, they should ship you a new one, just go off the batch number printed on the chip if you dont have the box

Do you know if Intels rma is uk based? I'll give it a try tomorrow at least that way I'll know the replacement will work.

Had mine done end of last year, it isn't uk based but turn around is pretty quick. Couple of weeks max. They might make you jump through a few hoops testing things and what not, I managed to skip that by explaining all the tests I had already gone through.
Shipped them the cpu, received a new one once they received my old one.

Checked the warranty online for the new cpu and I got another 3 years! Awesome!

Intel rma very good just get in touch with them and explain what testing you have done...ie all fine till cpu is changed.

Got mine replaced under warranty and i didn't have the original receipt for it as was bought 2nd hand....though i never mentioned that during the rma process.

New cpu arrived 8 days after the dead was was picked up by DHL free of charge.

Bonus too was the replacement has a 3 year warranty still according to the intel warranty checker.
