Been gettings BSOD errors every few days randomly in windows xp:

"Kernel_data_inpage_error"

but now windows won't even boot, I get the error message:

"A disk error has occured, press Ctrl alt and delete to reset"

Is the hard drive buggered? or could it be a damaged windows install?

Cheers

EDIT: It seems to boot ok now - surely there's something wrong with the drive still though?

What make of hard drive is it? Would probably be best to run a diagnostic on the drive. If you can tell me what make it is I can point you towards the right diagnostic software

Microsoft said:
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Explanation:

This Stop message indicates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory. This Stop message is usually caused by a bad block (sector) in a paging file, a virus, a disk controller error, or failing RAM. In rare cases, it is caused when nonpaged pool resources run out. It is also caused by defective hardware
Could be problem with either HD or RAM. Latter is more common especially around here (OcUK forums). Please provide full specs of PC if you can?

Meantime, try doing a disk scan...
  • Windows Key +R
  • Type in Chkdsk /f /r
  • Restart the system then seat back, could take awhile
You could also try running a Memtest to check the RAM. See here ;)

You should also download Seatools (can be found on the Seagate website) which is their diagnostic tool. Lets you create either a bootable floppy or CD and its very easy to use. If the drive is in warranty and is failing it even gives you an RMA number!
