Hi, i am a bit of a tech noob, however i have been advised that the harddrive from our laptop is dead.

Replacing the item is not a problem, all the stuff on the drive however is.

Is it possible to get the data off the drive at all? what is the best way to go about trying to get the data off?

also what information can i provide to help people answer this question?

Please bear with me on the techie side of this, but any help or advise would be great.

what make/model hdd is it? tried plugging it in another machine to see if you can see any data on the drive?

I will dig out the make/model of drive when i get home. The drive has been looked at by someone who has advised that the drive itself is dead. He booted the laptop from an independant HDD with an OS present and the original laptop drive wont even spin up apparently.
So the laptop is fine but the HDD is not :(

I've been in this position with a laptop drive, and it sucks. I had just uploaded some photos, and was in the process of backing up when it crashed.

I sent it off for evaluation, and they wanted £500 to get the data off.

Moral of the story - always always make backups. Unfortunately most ppl learn this the hard way.

Heh, just noticed this....Far as I'm aware, if the drive isn't spinning you don't have much luck :(

I can recover deleted files and stuff, and recover work from hard drives which are apparently empty, but from a hard drive that's not spinning is beyond me I'm afraid matey! :p
