Dead iphone failed during contract where do I stand

Usually Apple do good-will if you contact them directly, on the net or at an Apple store. Failing that however, the offer a subsidised replacement like-for-like as far as I can recall.

If the phone has only started to develop issues then it wasn't a fault at the beginning of the contract. The phone is now out of warranty because it is passed a year. The only thing you can do is purchase a second hand one or ask Apple to repair it for a cost or a different phone for the remainder of you contract.

This.

If the problems have only just started you're better off just taking it to the apple store and paying. If the phone is over a year old and only just developing faults you won't get anywhere

Proving your claim for faulty goods
If your claim under the Sale of Goods Act ends up in court, you may have to prove that the fault was present when you bought the item and not, for example, something which was the result of normal wear and tear.
If your claim is about a problem that arises within six months of buying the product, it's up to the retailer to prove that the goods were of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, or as described when it sold them.
For example, by showing that the problem was caused by an external factor such as accidental damage.

You're going to have a very hard time arguing that this is not wear and tear and that "marks under the screen" were present at the time of manufacture, but you just couldn't see them. Likewise the broken home button and OS issues. The home button is used every day. Heavy use of a phone over a 14/15 month period could involve pressing that button millions of time. Proving the home button fault is not wear and tear will also be difficult.

A letter from a local phone shop saying its faulty will not prove that one way or the other
