dead laptop - transferring data to new laptop

My girlfriends parents laptop died last week (MB & CPU) so they've ordered a new one. Is there a way that I can transfer the data from the hard drive of the old laptop onto the new laptop??

If the old laptop isn't going to be repaired then the easiest option will be to remove the HDD and put it into a USB caddy. It's not difficult to do once you find the HDD in the old lappy, if you can try and find the maintenance manual for the machine that'll tell you where to go (assuming hte normal manual doesn't)

All the 2.5" caddies are pretty much of a muchness, there are 4 or 5 on here, I'd be going for one of the cheap ones, probably the Akasa second from the top.
