Dead MacBook Pro

Does the sale of goods act not cover Apple products?

Glad you got a result in the end though.

Very much this.

With Apple Care you are basically getting a year of cover, not the three years they try and sell it as (that's taking the two year guide, not the full blown six year SoGA 'cover' that some try and tout). Though admittedly they are rumoured to go above and beyond what SoGA requires if you do have Apple Care. Personally I hope to never find out!

Everyone likes to manipulate the SoGA for their own benefit.

AppleCare is extended warranty as well as extended technical support.

Other than the extra outlay that's the reason I didn't take Applecare. I'm Apple Certified, so don't need the phone and software support it provides in addition to the hardware benefits.

Just picked it up. Other than the minor annoyance of having to remember all my passwords that were in the keychain all appears well at the moment.

Right, where's Battlefield. ;)

Yeah, there is that. Question is what the spec would be... I can live without the dGPU, however the current MBP has extra RAM and a 512Gb SSD installed post-purchase.

There's no chance they will match the spec based on what you have installed post purchase. You might however have a chance arguing you need the dGPU im guessing if you can prove its faster. If they did allow you a model with a dGPU it would be the top model 15" retina as thats the only model they do with one and it includes 16gb ram 512gb ssd.

As above, the sales of goods act isn't a warranty. Also, if you go into Apple and start waving the law around they tell you to deal with their legal department, so the 'disappointed customer' role is the best one to play.

Absolute rubbish. They have a process for dealing with consumer law claims which we use several times a week at work - we even (regularly) process consumer law claims where the product wasn't bought from us or Apple.

They are more than reasonable about repairing products under EU consumer law.

If you act like a berk they might clam up, but there's no reason why you shouldn't let them know that you know you have rights under the law.

So has it been repaired 3 times now?

The boards i have heard of being replaced unfortunately have never lasted as they are just refurbs or new ones with the same year/date code of GPUs so they don't last.

Twice.

The first replacement was definately a refurb - there were wear marks on the ports. This one looks better, not that it means much.

If the 2012 logic board is a straight swap in it would make more sense for Apple to use those instead.

It'll definitely be a 2011 still. And they will all definitely be refurb boards.

Only times that service parts are new is when the product has just come out.

I figured as much. It was the same when I did warranty repairs in-store for the purple shirts back in days of yore.
