Dead PC - Hard drive to fault?

Hey,

My brothers PC died the other day, and since I'm such an extraordinarily helpful human being I decided to comply when he asked me to have a look at it. I haven't seen this particular situation before, but my personal guess is that the hard drive has had it - but I thought I'd describe the situation here and get some second opinions before splashing the cash on a brand spanking new drive.

Basically, the PC turns on, the monitor turns on, it starts to boot up, goes past the bios screen - but as soon as it comes to what should be the Windows XP load screen (You know, the black screen with windows xp logo and a loadbar) it just goes dead black instead. Nothing. So my thinking is along the lines that there is nothing to boot to since the drive is dead - anyone else think this would be the problem? The bios does still detect the hard drive though.

Regards,

Zodar

I would try booting it with a Linux Live CD such as Ubuntu which should tell you if the rest of the system is working ok. After that you could try looking on the HDD manufacturers website for a diagnostic tool to check the HDD is definitely finished as it might just need a repair install / reinstall of XP.
