Took the side panel off my PC case to install a new 120mm fan. Bit fiddly, but got it there in the end.

Reconnected all wires and plugs etc.

Booted up ok, except I now had a very high pitched noise coming from the speakers.

Decided to open up the case to see if I could see a problem. I noticed that a cable from my soundblaster audigy 2 zs (see pic) although connected to the sound card, had become disconnected from the DVD ROM.

I decided to remove it and then refit it. As I pulled it through the mass of wires in the case the PC suddenly died.

I finshed pulling the wire out, and attempted to re-start the PC.

For a brief quarter-of-a-second (approx!) the fans start to spin, but then nothing. No mobo beeps at all.

The light on the motherboard is lit. If I try to re-start again, there is nothing. However, if I remove the plug from the wall and wait 10 seconds, reconect, and try again, I get the 0.25 second fan spin berfore silence.

I am assuming it is either the PSU or the Mobo that have died. The PSU is only a few months old and is a Corsair hx 620

The mobo is an Asus a8r32-mvp.

This system has been relatively stable since installing the new PSU. However I had begun to notice that the PC would intermediately freeze then re-set about once or twice every 24hrs, usually accompained by a stange noise from the speakers.

I have taken the soundcard out and attempted to restart, but still nothing. I have attempted to restart with no power to the HDDs or DVD-ROMs but again nothing.

Apart from buying a new system, which I can't afford, how do I determine what the fault is?

Many thanks in advance.

Hussman.

The other components are

CPU : AMD skt 939 4000+
GFX : ATI 1800XT
MEM: Corsait 2gb (4x500) Twin X LED stuff)
DVD-ROM Samsung DVD-ROM x 2
1x 150Gb Raptor
1x 500GB IDE Seagate HDD

Did you remove the cable while the PC was on?

May be a short, have you tried stripping the computer and buidling it outside the case yet as it usually is a good port of call when you are unsure of whats going on with short power on times.

If you pulled out the cable while it was on it may have shorted something...Shouldn't be pulling your pc apart while it's on ;)

But as Yewen says, you could try booting up outside of the case.

Another thing you could try is unplug all relevant power connections, the 24-pin and 4-pin one etc, then connect them again, leave the poinltess stuff unplugged for now (cd-rom etc).

You could also try reseating your ram and cpu if you have the time :)

And of corse if you have a spare psu handy, it may be worth trying that as well.

Yes, done it loads of times before with no ill effects, not this time :(

Not done it yet, will give it a go next weekend.

Thanks

Hi,

An update...

...tried a new power supply, mobo still in case, and it worked.

...next tried old power supply and it work too!

Must have been a loose wire or something.

All fixed, happy camper again.
