Oh my......wait, there we go...I laughed. I'm going to hell now thanks to you. lol

I think the key to dead people jokes and taste boils down to 2 factors.

Factor 1 - The dead person in question
Factor 2 - How recently they died

It does appear that the more recent the death , the more its considered in bad taste. Also the person in question is a massive factor, for instance I see people getting all angry about a Jade Goody joke or whatever, yet the next day they laugh themselves silly about a hitler or saddam joke.

Frankly its that kind of hypocrisy that annoys me far far more than any dead persons joke. I *^($^& hate hypocrites, worst kind of person I encounter in my opinion.

So if you accept that it is a complex relationship then why do you want it to be black and white about what is or is not acceptable? Hitler and Saddam are generally acknowledged to have been 'bad' men, Jade Goody isn't someone I'd have classed as morally evil by any stretch - thick, grasping and objectionable perhaps but there's quite a big leap from there to the likes of the aforementioned two.

The issue of timing has something to do with a bit of decorum and respect for the dead, telling a joke about someone who has just died can be viewed as a lack of respect but then it depends on the sort of person they were - some people would expect to be joked about when they are dead, I'd certainly not take any offence to my friends and family laughing after my death (well I'll be dead so it's rather hard to stir up the necessary moral outrage after that point).

In regard to the original point, I'm personally quite hard to offend and will laugh at and make some rather dubious jokes but I'm usually very certain of my audience before I do so because I try to respect other peoples feelings and accept that they may not share the same views as me.

I'm not fussed about what is acceptable and what isnt, I generally dont go by what people "decree" as acceptable myself anyway. I was merely just pointing out that I dislike the hypocrisy of a person who says a blanket statement like "you should never speak ill/joke about the dead" and then does so themselves just because the dead person is a "bad" person. If they are going to make a blanket statement like that, then it should apply to all the dead, not just some and not others. Its kind of like having a go at someone and saying that they shouldnt be racist if they make a joke about pakistani's and then laughing silly the next day about an irishman joke.

True and that is one of the reasons why I generally dislike blanket statements (no points for noting any irony in that). However it wouldn't be hypocritical to choose not to joke about some dead people but to do so about others, that would simply be a personal choice and you could still note that you find it distasteful with some of the jokes.

If you are being entirely logical and consistent then you should apply the same code to all people or none but that discounts that peoples emotional feelings towards individuals or groups will vary, that's just a simply fact of life.

I'm not going to change my opinion on someone because they're dead, ie. adolf hitler, pol pot, jade goody. (and heres to hoping that kerry mcfadden gets cancer soon, oh and george bush, that'd be good)
At the end of the day if i didn't like someone i don't have a problem making jokes about them when they're worm food.

The offensive jokes are always the best anyway, clean comedy is just boring. Morality is overated.

To be honest I'm a bit of a hypocrit when it comes to these kinda jokes. I very very rarely get offended by them, in fact me and my friends were cracking the Jade jokes at the pub last night and I have laughed at my fair share of Madelene McCann jokes (yes, I know, I'm going to hell) but I drew the line when someone told a joke about Sophie Lancaster...I suppose its easier to laugh at jokes about people who aren't "one of us" (she was a goth/metaller...so am I).
