I part exchanged my old '97 Proton Compact 1.6 auto' when i was buying my Celica GT a few weeks ago.

I checked out used prices before getting rid, and it looked like the most i would get would be about £350 via private sale.

The car had several problems,

  • It used to belong to my Grandad who had banged it into various walls and bollards, which is why we took it off him (he was getting too old to drive). This was all at very low speeds so it'd had minor body work repair and a very poor left side panel respray at some point. Parts of the front body had been slightly bent out of place, and there were several area's of deep rust where damage had earlier taken place. Also there was some heavy lacquer peel on the rear of the car.
  • The car had really bad knocking on full steering lock and produced a horrible crunching/scraping noise at the back when going over bumps. Every time the car was started it made a horrible squeeling noise from the engine, one of the belts i presume.
  • Breaks made an awful racket, especially in reverse. And as the cold weather came in the car failed to start first time around on several occasions.
  • The front wipers didn't clear the rain at speeds above 60mph, because the wiper arms were slightly corroded meaning they would flex out of position at high speeds.
  • The electric mirrors no longer worked, and the cig lighter was broken. The electric windows were half broken. The left window took about a minute to go all the way up, and the drivers window stopped half way and you had to push it back up to the top.
  • And finally, the dash rattled like crazy and the parcel shelf hinges were broken which produced a horrible rattle all the time.
  • It drank petrol like nothing i have ever seen. Seriously poor mpg, something up with the engine because it was terrible?

On a positive note, it still drove ok, handling seemed alright, and got me from Leeds to Sheffield at a very noisy 80mph 3 times a week for a year. Never broke down when i had it. And maybe it's saving grace was the fact that it only had 43,000 on the clock.

Anyway, the idea of trying to sell an old Proton privately didn't sound too appealing. After all, who wants an old Proton? Especially one with so many problems?

As i wanted to get rid quickly and get my Celica GT, i took it to the dealer who offered me £240 for it part exchange. I accepted as it saved me the hassle and time that would be wasted 'trying' to sell it myself.

So, i thought he might possibly try and sell the car for £500 tops? Or possibly scrap it, or break it and sell the parts.

I checked the dealers website today and he's got it up for sale at £1000 !!??

I really dunno how he expects to sell such a car for so much more than it's worth. Even a mint version of the car would struggle to fetch that, especially in todays market.

I'm just a bit baffled really, so fancied writing it all down and having a mini rant. Because my gf doesn't listen to me when i rant about cars :D

He won't sell that car for anywhere near £1k unless someone really stupid comes along.

Personally I think you did a bloody good job getting rid of a proton auto and getting a Celica GT.

Your proton driving days are hopefully over.

some people need horlicks to sleep at night

that dealer sounds like one of them as he obviously got no intention of fixing the problems or telling the prospective buyers about them and shifting it on as "immaculate"

Well anyone with half a brain should be able to see that it's not worth 1k, and after a 10min drive would soon confirm this.

Ha! It was my first car so i was 'fond' of the little thing, but after getting my GT i really can't see my self ever going back to a Proton! :)

My GT was priced at £2k, i got him down to £1500 and got him to MOT it and wack a years TAX on top and replace some valves. A fair price i think, after a lot of haggling.

It worries me tho if he is that 'type' of dealer. As he did my MOT and repair work in house, i'm worried that the MOT was a bodged job and something might be up with the GT that he didn't tell me about.

Might be worth me getting a garage to look over it for me to check?

What do you think?

To be fair, he may have fixed the stuff on your car?

Either that or you're screwed, personally I would hope for the best, it's a Toyota which is a good start.

Yeah, nothing seems to be wrong with it, or not that i can tell from driving it anyway.

I might pop down to the garage at the bottom of the street and slip them £20 to give it a quick check over. Would be interesting to know if there was anything up with it anyway.

I think he's a typical car dealer, mark it up high to knock off a load & make a sale....

I'd certainly check your new car out, speaking from my experience of the trade, if the fault can be hidden, it is as fixing them takes profit out of the deal.

More than likely.

What did the RAC/AA inspection turn up when they viewed it for you?

Maybe he underestimated just how much money needed to be spent on the Proton to get it in a sellable condition, threw more money than he wanted at it and is now just hoping that some old boy takes a shine to it and pays big money for it.

Nothing mate, because i didn't pay for an AA/RAC inspection.

I was in contact with the boys & girls at the celica club for many weeks before i bought it. They gave me a huge checklist of common faults and i spent a long time going thru each one. Everything came out ok.

Does it not make you wonder just how much he paid for your GT ;)

Yeah, it does.

That could be true. I have no idea if he has fixed it up or not, he may well have.
