Dealing with mice..

So far the tally is 5..
Same. In about a fortnight - we're getting better though.

My girlfriend figured out after a night's bad sleep that they're running along the skirting where it's flat-topped. So we placed folded traps at edges of furniture and caught one within 5 minutes.

Then we caught a pair! Big and small.

Hoping for a clear night's sleep tonight...

No more additions, I’ve not heard any more sounds from the two spots for the last few days.

I’ve moved the traps around, no moves or triggered traps.

Late night after watching John wick 3.

Justheard a noise in the attic and a crack a with scrapes and scratches dying away. The position is where I’ve left a trap so.. will see tomorrow if we have additional dead.

will have to check the wiring up there too in case the blighters have been gnawing.

+2 when checking the traps today (not looked for several days) then +1 judging by the sound about 20mins ago upstairs.

I think the cold weather pushing them indoors again as we’ve not seen any for a while.

I found one in a trap I'd forgotten to check today too. It was pretty small and up in my studio where I'd last heard noises at night.

Along with the one I got in the kitchen last week I make that 11. I boarded up the kitchen door then too - had a big gap at the bottom.

Try not to leave too long they end up stinking and basically just a ball of fur to clean from trap (Electric in my case), I did exactly that behind my mothers washing machine lol.

Just heard one of the traps in the loft go off. Probably new generation of mice looking for a new home.

i’ll reset the traps in the garage too I think.

EDIT: yep seemed to be a youngish mouse.

Love all this humane rubbish. If you release a mouse into the wild it will almost certainly die anyway. Not to mention it can in certain locations be illegal to release them.

Even the RSPCA recommend killing them swiftly.

Forgot about this thread, interesting timing. Maybe it's related to the hot summer we've had?

A week ago I saw a couple of mouse droppings in the kitchen. Whacked a few traps down, including one under the gap in the kitchen door. I can't seal it as it's by the hinge, I've already bolted a panel to the rest of the door.

First thing in the morning - got a mouse. Ha! Caught you coming in the door mate. Relaid trap.

Next morning - got a mouse. Wow! They must think I'm easy pickings.

Third morning - trap has been carefully moved out of the way. Eh? Was the mouse inside and it's figured out how to escape? Move trap back. Next morning it was moved aside again.

Day 3 I tucked the trap under the doorframe so it couldn't move and caught the little guy within hours. So that's the plan now.

Then Monday I caught 3 mice throughout the day by just relaying new traps.

Yesterday brought the count to 7. 7 in one week! We also had one night where there was a mouse in my room. That one was smart, just nibbling the bait off the traps and moving on.

What bait you using @LuckyBenski ? I had been clear of mice but lo and behold I could hear scratching again the other night in the attic again! I even made an effort over the summer to plug any gaps I could find but as it's a semi detached they could be coming from anywhere

Funnily enough I've found that poisoned bait is also the most successful thing for traps.

It's a brand called ROBAN cut wheat bait. Blue and apparently scented with chocolate - get the smaller grain size rather than the big stuff for rats. I bought a 5 sachet pack about 5 years ago and I'm still working through it. I use evil glue traps too.

Glue traps are fine if you inspect them regularly and kill the mouse quickly, otherwise letting something starve to death is quite cruel.

I don't know how true it is, but one tip I read was to go all out on the first night. Multiple traps all over.

The suggestion was that you'll catch more on that first night than on any other night. As if the mice get aware that there's trouble afoot after seeing their mate get flattened -and learn to avoid traps, etc.

Animals soon learn. Use different baits and after the first round of trapping, cover the traps with sawdust, then cotton wool. It disguises the traps better.

Got that tip from a 19th century book an ratcatching ("Full Revelations of a Professional Rat-catcher After 25 Years' Experience"), which is a terrific read:

He even talks about "the good old days, before the animal rights laws came in". People never change, eh?

If it's a semi - is it 1930s ish? Do you have air bricks and a mostly suspended floor? If so - have a look at auto mesh - the stuff body repairers use. I got under the floorboards and sealed them with some very fine mesh... set them in silicon and the mice problem disappeared overnight... You can always do it externally too!! Just paint it over for aesthetics...
