Dean Ashton

4 games last season, I mean how can you pay a players wages and have him only play 4 games, oh its WHU a team owned by bankrupt Icelanders :(

Cracking player and he is what England needs a big old fashioned striker but we will have to make do with Rooney and Heskey

"make do with Rooney" ?

Almost every club and country would be more than satisfied to "make do with rooney".

Bit of a strange one really as it is very, very rare you see a relatively top player (i.e. established Premiership pro who has been in the England squad) forced to retire due to injury that early in their career. Even the seemingly injury prone (King, Owen etc) always make it back, as well as those with very serious one-off injuries. The way the BBC phrased it he's basically been out for a year with a sprained ankle?

He's still contracted to WHU until 2013 on a £2.5m salary so I suppose if he is able to negotiate himself a decent payout it may be worth it rather than continuing to slave away and risk more serious long-term damage. At 25 though you would have thought though if he has any chance of getting fit again he would surely want to work at it. Rosicky was able to come back after an 18-month layoff and indeed even the worlds best strikers like Ronaldo and Shearer have been able to return to top level play after some serious problems.

Never nice somebody retiring early, particularly when he's in his mid twenties.

Got to say I know sod all about him though, I remember a big hooray when he came back last time round but just haven't seen much of him.

Poor guy.

West Ham striker Dean Ashton retires because of injury

West Ham's former England striker Dean Ashton has announced his retirement at the age of 26 after failing to recover from a long-term ankle injury.

This has been "known" for quite a while now. Still truly gutting though for him and the fans.

Would've gone on to make a fair few appearances for England and more than likely would've had a World Cup squad place next year too. (Hopefully Carlton will get the nod instead!) :p

Best of luck for the future Deano!

Bad news when any player is forced to retire early - I guess one silver lining is that he's been crocked (but still paid) for so long that you would hope he has put away a fair bit of money just in case, and also I think players have insurance against career-ending injuries too these days.

He'll have a decent wedge of cash so won't be slumming it but still a shame. It must be horrible to just get to the point people are taking notice, getting England call up's and possible transfer to a top 6 club and he'll never have a chance to prove himself at the top level.

Maybe he'll get into coaching or something and stay involved in football.

Real shame :(

Looked like he was going to make the step up and was being lined up by the top-4 clubs around the time of the injury too.

There is some good news though, he's reportedly considering taking legal action agaist Chelsea as SWP (who caused the injury while on England duty) was their player at the time :p
