Dean Ashton

He's known for over a year that he would never play again. I heard it last October (2008) and I was probably one of the last to hear. Gutted for him.. he's a nice guy.

Such sad news. Retiring at the age of 26...just when he should be coming the golden years of his career! Just imagine what could have been if he hadnt got injured...

...a World Cup place could have been up for grabs (maybe just maybe)!

Dont think he can sue SWP or Chelsea....get a payout from the English FA...maybe???

LOL, can you imagine it in court, you can just see SWP's eyebrows peeking over the top of the dock, with a strapping great 6'3" Dean Ashton pointing at him going "yes your honour, he's the one who assaulted me" :)

Hopefully he's been reasonably sensible with his cash and will be set for life, I would have thought so bearing in mind the stupid wages WHU were chucking around back when he signed his 5 year deal, supposedly he's on £3m/year. Christ, when you think about it they must have been paying Ljungberg, Dyer and Ashton well in excess of £10m/year to lie on the treatment table.

Well the English FA will pay WHU £7m (transfer fee). They had him insured if something like this or even a small injury were to happen.

As for the suit, it'd be bizarre if it was against Chelsea. It would be with the English FA surely.

The FA apparently seem to think since he made a return after getting injured with England that the responsibility falls on how he got injured after that. Though its obviously a recurring injury, but insurance wise everyone will try to get out of being culpable but the simple fact is he would have been insured so will likely get a decent pay out, though his insurance company, the insurance England use will have a massive fight over whose liable and probably without Ashton's insistance both companies will try to pass the buck to SWP's insurance company because I'm sure players have included in their own insurance a pay off if you end someones career thing added in.

Thing is, I didn't realise how bad it was, he's had 4 op's and is apparently going in for a 5th very soon because he can't even walk without pain. Screw all the money in the world frankly, being able to do something as simply as walking without pain would seem to be a nice outcome for him at this point.

A guy with massive earning potential gets a career he loves cut short, but he should be consoled by the fact he can walk?

I'm not sure what your point is, firstly, he's already richer than 99% of the country, thats not to bad to start with, secondly I never said he wouldn't get a payout, he will it will be from one insurance company or another, nor did I say he didn't deserve it.

Infact in the 2nd paragraph all I said was he'd be happy being able to walk again, infact pretty ridiculously happy.

From someone who has two utterly crocked knee's, I can tell you without question that being able to walk without any pain at all would mean more to me than being a billionaire(only just though, a billion is a heck of a lot).

Being unable to walk without pain, effectively disabled for the rest of his life and 5mil in the bank, or walk without pain and no money, that seems to be what you think I said. Had I said that, i'd take the later, he'd take the later, most people would take the later, only those who can't comprehend how much chronic pain effects you would take the money, and they'd all regret it for decades.

But like I said, I didn't suggest one or the other, I was merely commenting on how bad he was, which I hadn't known before. Unable to be a athlete and train every day of the week as a footballer is one level, being unable to walk without pain is a totally different level of injury.

I hadnt realiseed all the problems came from one bad tackle in training all those years ago - I really feel for him

Its bad enough that the typical footballer has a top flight career of 5 - 10 years (and very few of them get newspaper articles /tv deals after retirement), but considering that he was never really given a chance to really prove himself I doubt he was on much money while he was totally healthy (and since the tackle, he could easily have been on a pay as you play deal due to health reasons)

(and who considers saving money when they are in their early 20's as he would have been when the tackle happened)

I hope the insurance payout is HUGE - but I wouldnt be surprised if there is some clause limiting the company's liability

He'll have plenty of money, he's known that he might need to retire for ages, even if he saved up for a few months that's enough cash to last him a years if he's remotely sensible. Pretty sure he would have been on approx £30k-40k
