Death/Dying

not too bothered about nothingness....as the great Arnie J would say...i may be a nothing but from what i was before nothing is up!

To quote Brian...

I mean, what have you got to lose?
you know, you come from nothing
you're going back to nothing
what have you lost? Nothing!

Always look on the bright side of life

Having just experienced 5 deaths in the space of a week (cousins, neighbours, friends) it sure is an eye opener. Makes one ponder on the meaning of life quite a lot.

Am I scared of dying? Nope. Am I scared of the pain of death? Nope.
Am I scared that there's an afterlife and I haven't done enough - yes!

Im not religious or anything,But ive always had a thought that after death,We get re-incarnated and be re-born,But not necessary human again.

Theres been cases before where people have been able to remember a past life and records confirmed that the past life existed,But the child was very young.so wouldn't have been able to read about it then say "that was me"..its wierd.

i want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandad,
not screening in terror like his passengers.

probably already been said, il get me coat...

Exactly... neurons stop firing, we're dead. When you get really drunk or take drugs, you aren't the same person and don't behave the same way because your brain chemistry and neural activity is changed. That is what defines who you are. When that chemistry ceases to exist, so do you, surely?

It must be possible to simulate that chemistry with sufficient computer power.

I think everyone longs for a peaceful death e.g dying peacefully in your sleep in old age. Not dying of a slow death in pain from cancer or some other illness.

Although knowing that you are dying enables you to get your affairs in order, etc. But who cares if they are in order or not if you are dead.

The bin lorry deaths in Glasgow made me think of that. Cannot imagine how you deal with that, out shopping near Christmas, your uncle, father and brother has been killed.

I cannot imagine how one must cope knowing your about to die or family member then told that night 3 family members have been killed out shopping. That is a lot to take in and try to handle the rest of your life especially the fact it was so close to no doubt the best time of the year.

I cannot imagine they'll feel the same way about Christmas time again.

I'd rather my passing be painless, but that is kinda impossible if you get a terminal illness of some kind. Not to bothered about death, you were essentially dead millions of years ago, simple non-existence. Now if you are religious then that brings up it's own conundrums, but I'm not so content with that fact.

You live and die.

How fast or what way you go does not matter as it all comes down to the same conclusion, you dead! Or so you think?

Life is just a bus ride through the journey of time and space. But the is no time, so it is literally a ride though space as an amalgamation of energetic particles. :D

Its not hard to understand just a little strange. ;)

Grandad passed this afternoon, found out an hour ago after my mum texted me and asked I don't call her for a day or two. Can't say I feel anything at the moment as I barely ever hung out with him.

Life eh...

That was my experience, he'd been dying from cancer for the last 6 months and didn't cry when I heard the news, but cried for my dad after the sheer devastation on his face. Bloody hit me like a ton of bricks when I was carrying his coffin too.

Yup, the soul was just early man's attempt to explain how living things moved/thought, hence some religions believe all animals have a soul (animism). Now we know we are just neurons and electrical impulses, and our personalities ("souls") can be altered due to brain damage or drugs.

I think dying is just like going to sleep, loss of consciousness. Nobody lies there all night thinking "I'm asleep now", it just happens and then you wake up like no time has passed.

It amazes how much mental gymnastics people go through to justify their beliefs though. I have debates at work almost daily about 2 of the Abrahamic relgions, and no matter how ridiculous or plain wrong some of the stuff they believe is, they will find a way to rationalize it or play the "you can't question it, it's faith" card (yeah I know you aren't supposed to discuss religion at work, but this one guy brings it up every day and blames atheists for the world's problems).

Similar really, although part of me is still staggered he was alive for as long as he was.

Pales in comparison compared to a friend of mine of who passed about 18 months ago after he was hit by a tube train. Was with him the night before at the England game, then got an email the next day. Hit home even more after the news started reporting it and his face was on the face of the evening papers...
