Death of a GPU :-( and advice pls

My work 8800 GTX died on Monday too. :< (Was my gaming GPU at one point)

I'd suggest buying a cheap 2nd hand GTX 970 and then wait a bit. If you resold it after say 3 months it would probably cost you £30 maybe.
holy moly 8800? do ppl still use those? i had that card like 10+years ago, what games do you play?

Why not buy the Asus 480 4GB card at £165?.

Also if you want the 8GB to tie you over, it's £30 more (for Asus). That means you won't lose a lot of money selling it on when the right GPU at the right price comes along and you can game whilst time does it's thang.
+1 to that. Cheapest way to get you up and running again and it will sell for about the same amount when Vega/1080Ti come out.....by then the UK will have triggered article 50 and you may even get more than you paid for it. :p

How's your games' crossfire compatibility? 480s are awfully cheap right now.

As good as SLI. The current games that support SLI support CF also, in some cases a game can support CF but not SLI. (BF1, Mass Effect Andromeda and everything that is using Frostbite etc).
But there are also new games that their engine doesn't support SLI/CF like RE7. But on that game the RX480 8GB perf will be great because it can activate shadow cache, giving an edge over NV cards.

I don't really want to buy & sell, I am not a market trader I am a consumer.

As a consumer I want a fair price for fair service. Now I agree that is highly subjective but let me summarise in no nonsense what that expectation is....

a 1080Ti like performance for £300 right now, today not in March, not in q3, not in 2018

instead I'm left fighting over who, what, where at a price I think is highly inflated due to market manipulation. In order to meet my gaming expectations not only will I have to wait but I'm going to have to pay roughly x3 the order of my expectation.

So here is the question, breakdown and outage aside...... am I wrong or am I being fleeced?

Unfortunately as there is currently no real competition to nvidia, they are price gouging :(

You either have to cough up the going rate or wait and see if amd can put something competing to the market.

I begrudgingly coughed up for a 1070 as i didn't want to wait.

Yes that does seem to be the reality of the situation, AMD aren't a charity either I'm sure they will price as keenly as they feel the need to regardless of the performance of their next GPU. 4k is a cruel mistress atm demanding the highest premium tech.

I just need a little more patience things should be a bit clearer next week.

There's some good offers on the 480 at the moment, there selling fast though. It could tied you over until there is something worthwhile upgrading to.

Don't really understand this, they have a price but should come down a bit ASAP, even i have good experience with RX 480. XFX GTR RX 480 XXX running without way less problem than nvidia card. infact, OC tops at 1450 MHz and very low power consumption.(I tested it at 1400 MHz and only eats up max 120 W)
