I had a call from a company yesterday called the "BCW group", they asked for me by my full name and asked me to confirm my address, I was a bit taken aback and asked them what they wanted my address for as I'd never heard of them, they said "It's a financial matter", while she was on the phone I google the company and noticed that it was a debt collection company. I asked the lady what it was regarding and she said that I had to confirm my address before she'd give me any details, I said "No, I've never heard of you, I know you're a debt collection agency and as I have no unpaid debts surely you can understand why I'm a bit dubious about giving my address out to a company I've never had dealings with", she then got her shirty voice on and said "Right, we'll send you a letter!" and put the phone down.

I got their number from their site and rang their head office who gave me a direct number to ring, the woman (different one) at the end of the phone asked me for my reference number (which I obviously didn't have) then asked me for my postcode instead, we went through every postcode I've ever lived at and she said she was unable to find any details about me, I asked her if she could find me by name, she said no, nor could she find me by my phone number as apparently they had "1000's of clients", I argued that I'm the only supposed "client" with this telephone number.

I'm a bit concerned as I know 100% that I have no outstanding debts, I even went to the trouble of paying for a credit report from experian and equifax just in case someone is running up debt in my name, nothing unusual showed up.

It's all very well her saying "we'll send you a letter" but clearly they don't have my address and if they can't find me despite me giving them every address I've ever lived at then I'm not sure what to do, anyone have any suggestions as I'm dying to know what it's about just in case it is some form of identity theft.

Did they ring your landline? Did they know your name? If they are going to send you a letter why did they ask for your address? When you rang them back it's obviousy they don't know who you are - I think they may have the wrong person surely?

ignore it now tbh.

you have done the right thing by calling back and asking for details, of which they cannot even find you on the system.

I get one from a company in preston saying I owe them 132 quid, due to a barclay card error thing, I sorted it all out with barclays but they still are fishing for money, I get things from about 3 different companies saying

"we will be calling at this address tomorrow"

Still nothing I've even tried ringing them but the number is out of order.

You receive an unsolicited phone call, then freely give caller your name and address to a complete stranger.

Oops.

Looks like they had his name already, but he didn't give out his address?

BCW = Buchanan Clarke & Wells, and they ARE a debt collection agency.

that said, they usually send you a postcard or something saying "we have been trying to reach you" or similar, or a letter...

avoid, and give no details to anyone who calls you cold like that.

bloody nigereans

The line I always take when people phone is don't give out any info, do it jsut to annoy them, My Bank phoned to discuss my account (wanted to know why I didn't want to increase overdraft)

They phone, and say "Hello This is (hight street bank Name), my name is (someones first name only). Can you confirm your Identity by telling me your Date of Birth and the First Line of your address?"

Me, "No, I'm not giving that information out to antone calling me, Why don't you tell me My D.O.B and first line of my address and last 4 numbers of my account so I know its really the Bank calling."

Bank, "We cna't give that information out Sir, until you confirm your identity"

Me "I'm not giving that out until you confirm yours first, you want to talk to me, you make the effort."

Hours of fun to be had.

I had a call the other day, and did exactly the same as you, something I do as a matter of course.

When I phone them back, it turns out they were phoning to inform me of fraudulent activity on my account.

The irony was completely lost on them when I pointed it out.

Then they tried to blame me for the fraudulent activity.

Until I pointed out that, at the time of the dodgy transactions, I had not even been informed of my card number, nor did I have the card in my possession.

Perish the thought that they might be at fault.

HSBC are always calling me wanting to discuss my account. Morons. I'm never confirming details including my security number on an unsolicited phone call. I always tell them just to send it out in writing. They agree to but someone else normally calls the next day, they get an earful. This happens every couple of months.
