Hopefully most of you will never run into or hear from one but I would just like to say im now very greatful to them

Owed £3800 to Egg when I was young and silly and have been running and hiding ever since

Anyway I got a nasty letter today which shocked me into action! Picked up the phone said sorry and can we come to an agreement.

Yes certainly sir would you like to settle the debt for £2040?

Result :)

Note - I know what I did was wrong and don't condone doing it just thought I'd give the "bad" guys credit :)

Blimey, you must have failed to pay lots of times for them to agree to that. Very surprising. I doubt you'll be able to get any credit for quite some time!

Yup and nope which is a good thing I think - credit cards are evil :(

You do realise it won't just affect getting credit cards don't you?

Congratulations on getting it sorted anyway, must be a weight off your mind!!

My mate did the same thing. He managed to pay everything off after coming to an agreement with the debt collectors about 5 years back and only now has he been able to be approved on a mortgage.

Well done on getting it sorted - just don't get into that position again. Unfortunately I think you've messed your credit rating for a while.

The UK has almost £60 billion in credit card and other debts :/

I think the agencies are only to happy to deal with people who want to pay something back, they'll make it easy for you as it saves them lots of time and effort - they are used to dealing with people who'll make every effort to avoid paying anything at all.

you could have negotiated 2 ways from what ive read, 1 is to lower it or the other to agree to take their rate but asking them to not effect your credit rating, using iva.

Thats not that bad* if you think about it as 60+ million people in the uk so thats only an avg of say £1.5k per adult

*I asume that the "other debts" include such things as mortgages

there are not 60 million adults dude ;) What about the people under 18 ;) Those were credit card debts not mortgages or unsecured/secured loans either!!

From what the beeb news said last week the average debt is somewhere about £25000 a person including mortages.

So even though i've got bad credit and am paying back 2 cards on a montly basis, I take a little pleasure in knowing i'm below average on the debt front (sort of)
