December's "phishing" phone call scam!

I had one the other day who said that my BT broadband was showing some illegal activity on the line. I was like, yeah that's me, and what? He just said "you ************" and put the phone down.
 
I don't get any of these calls because my phone (BT8600) blocks them. I signed up to the TPS before we got this phone and nobody pays any attention to it so we were getting cold calls and scammers phoning several times during the day and even at night. Enough was enough so we bought a twin set of this phone and haven't had any since.

I had someone from my "internet service provider" call me Sunday whilst I was sorting out my niece's laptop (she wasn't here was just me and my brother), apparently there was some dodgy activity on my account, when queried he said it was porn to which I replied it was more than likely me, he preceded to say it was some real filthy stuff to which I said yeah that's still me (brother was howling at this point) and when he said it was too filthy to be me I said to him that normal porn just doesn't do it for me anymore so I have to look at real sick stuff now just to get myself off, he gave me a tirade of abuse and hung up!!

A win in my book :D

Your bank won't ask you to actively block a transaction, if they're suspicious they'll block it and ask you to authorise it.

Anything which is trying to force you to make a quick action to stop a payment/transfer/other bad thing is a scam.

I have a call blocker at home but when calls do get through from unknown numbers I don't have to engage with 90% of them by doing simply this....

1: Pick up the handset and put it to your ear (don't speak or blow into the mouth piece or knock the phone to initiate any sound pickup into the mic)...
2: Within a few seconds the call is dropped (often automatically).

This is because the auto dial setups they have are waiting for noise back on the line which marks a line that has been auto dialled ready for an "agent". i.e. Often it works like this:

1: Auto dial system gets to your number in a list or is randomly generated
2: Your number is called
3: Auto dial system recognises call answered and connected but awaits "hello" or audible response to mark call as active with human
4: You say hello
5: Auto dial system recognises audible response and then auto forwards to available agent within a few seconds
6: "Hello Sir this is microsoft...."

When you don't say anything at step 4, it can often break the system and the call just drops and moves on to the next one on the list. This is why you often get a delay of a few seconds when connecting to these scammers.

This works very well for me too! I no longer have a landline connected due to only having spam callers using it.

You’re right about the “wait”, a dead giveaway, I hang up if there’s no immediate response.
If you called me, I’d see jaybe on the screen, and immediately say, “Hi jaybe, what’s up?”, and we’d have a conversation.
I had one of those, “You were in an accident that wasn’t your fault” ones a while back.
I said, “Oh yes, I’ve had amnesia ever since then.”
Excited, she said, “How long have you had that?”
I said, “How long have I had what?”, and it all went quiet after that.

I got the first model of privacy phone (BT6510 IIRC) but I've set it to not block because of the possibility of over-blocking. So I've set mine to go straight to answering machine silently unless I've whitelisted the number. That way, no genuine calls are blocked and no scammers and nuisance calls can bother me. I've found that some of the scammers that use robocallers have their machine leave a message on my machine. I had this scam a couple of weeks ago and thought it was an obvious scam so I just phoned my bank's customer services to check.

There's the part that shouldn't usually be done. If you want to phone for something, you find the number yourself rather than just accepting whatever number you're given. Any vaguely competent scammers will have a response set up that will sound plausible. You were OK because you had already decided it was a scam and couldn't be persuaded that it wasn't, but that's where a lot of people get scammed.
 
had a few pre-recorded Amazon Prime 'scam calls' recently, can't rememebr what the message was but was something along the lines of 'your Prime membership is about to expire, press 1 to renew for £39.99'!

last 'accident claim' call...said I had a collision with a clown car 4 years ago :p

I sometimes miss these I haven't had a scam phone call or any phone call from a legit company on years!! The only ones I can remember getting are:

They phoned me up telling me I crashed my car in which I replied I haven't and they were adamant that I had and even asked if I'm sure to which I said yes because I can't drive :D needless to say they said I didn't have to be driving lmao and refused to believe me when o said I hadn't crashed

2nd one someone phoned up from " orange" saying I won an iPad and got mad when I refused it because I said I didn't need one because I have. PC he then tried to fob me off saying i could take it out with me to which I replied that's what a smart phone is for:p he then put the phone down and got his friend to phone me 10 seconds later :D:D

  • I refused and said that I believed that they were scammers, the person on the other end of the line very politely said that he quite he understood and told me to call the number on the back of my card.
  • I am aware that callers can "hold the line open" and so called my bank on a different mobile - they confirmed that this precise scam is doing the rounds at the moment.
  • I checked the calling phone number and it is not associated with any Bank.

if i dont recognise the number i just let it ring until it cancels itself then google the number, if its legit i ring them back if not then i just block it and move on with my life.
