I am apparently on a 10mb line now with Virgin media but when doing a speed test on here http://www.giganews.com/test_connect.html

I'm getting this :(

Now am I being dumb here but shouldn't I be up the other end? :/

My modem is plugged directly into the PC no Router as I was giving it the best possible chance

Let me know so I can abuse VM

Try downloading something you normally would. No speed tester ever seems to give me constant results. For example, on my 20mbit cable connection right now I'm getting results of about 12mbit via speedtest.net, yet I'm quite happily downloading at 2400KB/sec (until the throttling kicks in of course ;)).

Speedtest.net is about as accurate as randomly guessing numbers.

As Phemo suggested, find a site that's preferably hosted in the UK, reliable, and fast enough to max out your connection. There's two suggestions in the sticky (UK Mirror Service and download.zensupport), for starters.

When i 1st got my broadband upgraded to BT's upto *mb package my speeds were allover the place, it actually took quite a few days to get a consistant result with any speed tester, it may be what's happening with you? Just a guess as i've never had any dealings with virgin.

Could you talk me through it please?

I've got that link ready to go which do you recommend for dl'ing?

If you mean the Zen link take your pick, it doesn't make much odds which of the files you download. There isn't much to talk you through - download one or more of those files at a time, and see how fast it goes...
