There are a fair few options if you know where to look. Are you looking for a realistic simulation, arcade action, or something in between?
I get a lot of enjoyment out of "lite" sims, such as Thirdwire's Strike Fighters 2 series, for me this involves a degree of reality along with being fun to play. There is also a huge modding community (based mainly at CombatAce.com), and there are quite literally thousands of user mods , including everything from air and ground units, maps to new campaigns.
Lomac and FC2 are a little more involved, but are also very enjoyable.

IL2 1946 + hyperlobby, youre sorted.
World War 2 combat sim, its pretty old now though. You could look at IL2 Cliffs of Dover, provided you have a nice pc as it needs a lot of horsepower.
IL2 1946 is my favourite as it is pretty easy to just pick and up play, you can have fun quickly and easily.

IL-2 Wings of Prey - fairly arcadey WW2 air combat game based on the IL-2 engine. Plays well and looks really nice.

seconded for WOP
IMO the best Jet Fighter Sim of recent times is not on the PC. Its on the PS3/360 - Ace Combat Assault Horizon. Awesome game.

Have you seen Wings of Prey? That's supposed to be good, I've got it on Steam but haven't got round to playing it yet.

i hated wings of prey because it was way too arcadey for me
i like strike fighters 2 primarily for all the mods and extra planes you can get ( i love the tsr2s and have had a hand in modifying 1 in a big way lol)
my favourite online flight sim is ww2 online its pretty unforgiving but extremely rewarding when you actually do kill somebody!

Modern air combat: LockOn Flaming Cliffs2
WW2 air combat: IL2:Cliffs of Dover. NEw mega patch is out for it this week, so it should be really good.
WW1 air combat (red baron and all that fun): Rise of Flight
All three have very good online multiplayer with lots of people playing.
