hey guys,

My girlfriend is looking around for a new camera, nothing fancy and she doesn't have a whole lot of free cash floating around so maybe something around £100?

From looking at a few review sites the canon powershot seems to be looking nice. I know most of you here are more interested in DSLRs and I'll be making a thread sometime early next year asking about a new one of them for myself but does anyone here have experience or know much about cameras around that price range?

Basically image quality comes foremost as well as some manual settings like exposure and such. She'd like a camera where she can do long exposure night shots like 5 second shots to catch very low lighting or the whole car lights in the dark thing :)

Are there any cameras that cheap with some decent manual settings?

I've got the Fuji f60fd and it's alright. However, I'm not convinced the pictures are any better than my 5 year old Sony Cybershot apart from having 3 times the resolution.

My mate has a Canon Ixus 100 IS, and it seems to be on a whole new level of quality.

After reading a good indepth review here it does seem very good. If we can find the f31fd for a good bit cheaper though that might be a better bet.

EDIT: I'll look into the canon ixus. More reviews to read :)

Well after having a look through some cameras she's now thinking about spending closer to €200 which is around £175. I still have to read up on the canon ixus and see if it's worth more then the fuji f50fd.

She'd like a camera with a good range of manual settings and in her words one that looked like a proper camera. That would seem to be a bridge camera to me but I doubt you can get one for that price. Are there any out there for that much?

Hrm, okay well it's been long enough and she's finally decided to buy. She's still not sure whether to go for the finepix S2000HD or the Canon Ixus 100.

Has anyone tried them both? Which give the best images in the end? What she really wants is the best image quality. The 15X zoom on the fuji would be good and I presume the fuji has some more advanced options but the size of the canon would make it far easier to carry around.

So, basically any advice on which one she could get? We can get either for €195.

If she is interested in a super zoom I'd consider a second hand panasonic fz28, roughly same size as the fuji s2000hd.

Samsung WB500 is also worth considering, quite slim for a super zoom and from the reviews I've read its pretty capable.
