Right, after 2+ years of popup free action, something nasty has got into my machine. I keep getting half sized windows open offering me stuff, when I don't even have IE open. I got back from eating my dinner, IE was not open but there were two of the buggers sitting there.

My popup blocker is up to date and working fine, it's just today (possibly since installing a freeware app I got from a mate  ).

I've got Spybot which I've updated and ran but still I'm getting these sneaky little things appear.

Help!

hijack this is basically impossible to get around but you need to interpret it yourself, I find most evil things stick out but a quick google on something you are not sure on and it wikll be confirmed (as people post the hijack this logs to the net)

As far as spyware prevention goes try spywareblaster (works with IE and firefox) and firefox

I've seen quite a few people recommend Hitman Pro for Spyware removal.....

It basically has Spywareblaster - Adaware - Spybot S&D - Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor and some other things all built in and runs alls programs at once for the ultimate spyware check :D

It's actually funny watching it install....You would think your PC was taken over as it runs through all the setup and installations for you.....Selecting everything for you

I tried Hitman Pro as it sounded like a good idea, but a few errors came up while it did its thing, then some more as the apps ran. Not sure I liked it deciding all the settings for me either, I like to know what these apps are doing.

Search & Destroy is pretty good. Found some on my PC that others progs didn't identify.

add another !!!!

by far one of the best for free !!!!!
As it says in the original post though, I tried Spybot and it didn't detect anything, and that was having just updated the definitions.

Ad-Aware however found 25 instances of naughtiness and having removed them the offending popup has not returned.

Has anyone tried to update Spybot recently? I keeep getting back checksum errors and stuff.

See if downloading the updates from either Safer Networking #1 or #2 helps.

Edit : Hitman Pro 2 is very good as previously posted. Installs, updates and configures.
