I know I could just go through the freeware thread, but I don't have the time at the moment to go through the whole list of video editing software listed there and I thought that posting would get a select list that actually suits my requirements.

I've stated a little project which (obviously) requires shooting a quite a bit of video and of course I now need some software to edit said videos.

All it need to be able to do is allow me to add one or more videos into a project, edit them, add any transitions to make it look less like a bodge job and be able to allow other additions to a project like adding extra audio recordings on the fly (I'm not sure how good the audio quality is on the mic on the camcorder I purchased is so I might have to record audio again if the source is crap) and output a final file.

It also has to be able to be able to run on a crappy laptop (at least until I get my slightly better desktop back in the game with its new hardware and operating system) even if it takes an hour plus to render a twenty minute video.

GoPro studio is pretty awesome, however, I think you need a GoPro... or at least capture your videos in the same format as a GoPro? (you can always convert the vids first I guess)

hitfilm 3 does a free version with 'add ons'...
There's also BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve 11 Lite

they might be worth a look

You can use Blender as an NLE. You can search how to do transitions and all that kind of stuff. Recording new audio from within Blender (assuming that's what you mean by "adding extra audio recordings on the fly") I'm not sure about, but you can obviously record in some other program and import the file.

I've run through the MS essentials 2012 install which has the only compatible version of movie maker for the OS I'm using (I have a feeling it won't be there after I upgrade to 10 since it doesn't seem to be in the list if I remember correctly), and I'll grab the latest versions of hitfilm and davinchi resolve when I'm on the laptop (since I'm not on it now, and the last two posts weren't there the last time I checked this thread).

And if I can't add in voice recordings on the fly (because I did a few test recordings and the sound wasn't as loud as I expected it to be when it came out of the camcorder speaker) I might just get an external audio recording device and add the audio to the video before generating the finished product.

Update:

Hitfilm was a big miss after I found out that you had to become a social network spammer just to get a download link, and I'm not down with that.

DaVinci Resolve did actually tell me that the laptop I'm using would be fine for the basic stuff, but once the program loaded it couldn't activate the quicktime decoder (quicktime was already installed) and then it told me to shut the program down and install openCL compatible hardware which it didn't tell me about during the initial setup process.

Windows Movie Maker did at least work, but it is seriously unstable and crashes if I look at it funny or even try adding stuff to a piece of the project (I managed to get the project started and the first video done, but WMM crashed twice and I pretty much gave up doing anything heavy with it and just got to rendering all the pieces into a complete video) and it seems to take ages to import captured footage from OBS.

I'm going to give blender a go the next time I have to do any video compiling and see if it works any better.
