Is this possible?

I'm not bothered if there label gaming or not and i'm also not bothered if it comes with a mic.

I just want a decent pair of headphones to game with.

Is there a difference between closed and open over the ear headphones?

Thanks.

Closed means you will not hear outside sounds and they will also have more bass.

Open sounds better but can lack bass.

Open is better for music, for gaming closed might be better as they tend to sound a bit livelier and have the deep bass you want when gaming.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Do you have any recommendations for closed headphones?

imo a lot of open headphones have more bass! Example:

DT 990s which are open generally are considered to be more bassy than DT 770s which are closed.

I also find more bass present on my T1s when I put my hands over the vents :)

990s are very good yeah :)

They are open so you'll still hear sounds around you as long as the volume isn't too high and you might annoy people with explosions if they're in the same room :P If that isn't an issue then they're very nice.

Very comfy and reasonably bassy so nice for music.

And one last check:

Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO Closed

Are they any good also?

Just wanting the choice between open and closed before i take the plunge.

Thanks.

To be honest, unless you've had a decent pair of headphones then you'd probably be happy with either. They don't sound miles apart from each other - the main difference between them being that the 990s are open and the 770s are closed. If you want to complicate things further than look at the 880s because they are semi open lol

I have an MMX 300 headset which is basically a pair of 32Ohm 770s with a nice mic bolted on and I also have a pair of old DT 990s from the 90s (haha!) and I think they both sound awesome.

Ultimately, unless you need the insulative properties of the 770s then I would stick with the 880s and 990s. Most people tend to prefer the airy feeling of open headphones. If you've ever used in-ear earphones then you'll know the feeling.

You might struggle to find these for around £100 though unless you're buying second hand. There's nothing wrong with buying these second hand normally as they are definitely built to last and you'll have spare parts available for a good many years to come! Just need to find a decent set somewhere hehe :)

Audio-Technica ATH AD700 are regarded as one of the best gaming headphones out there.

Generally see those recommended because of their lack of bass which means you can focus more easily on the important sounds in a game. Big boomy explosions aren't as important as footsteps or reloading noises etc.

Personally I'd rather have a headphone that'll do me for everything so I definitely want some bass there hehe :)

I have them on right now. And they are great :)

Sorry to ask a daft question, but with them being open, how noticeable will the noise be to other people around me?

I speak a lot on vent and listen to music, sometimes the vent chat isn't really appropriate for others to listen to :p, so would they be able to hear it?

Depends how loud you have your headphones really! If the volume was fairly loud and the rest of the room was quiet then they certainly might hear whats being said.

Beyer do some more high end closed headphones (the T70s) but those are still over £400 so not cheap.

If you can't decide between closed and open then you may want to wait for http://www.beyerdynamic.de/custom/index.php?l=1

The new Custom series headphones will allow you to switch from open/semi/closed at the flick of a small lever! You may also be able to have a mic on there amongst the options as well as making them look snazzy with custom decals :D

After looking into a video of the 990's i don't think my partner would appreciate the amount of noise they let out, so i'd have to go for a pair closed.

You said the 770's are no different from the 990's there just closed right?

If thats the case i'll probably buy them, the Denon just seem way way to plasticy for my tastes.

Thanks.

I've never checked to see if they are exactly the same drivers in both but it certainly wouldn't surprise me! That's assuming you're comparing the same impedances etc.

Build quality on them is definitely awesome and I can't say I've read a bad word about them anywhere really so I'm sure you'd be happy with a set.
