So my 360 just died, which is a bit of a downer. On the plus side, my student loan just came in. I'm now chosing between a few courses of action.

1. Send my current one back for repair and leave it at that.
2. Go out and buy a new premium, and take the current one back a few days later and claim that it's broken, using the recipt.
3. Buy a core, transfer the HDD over and send the premium back to MS, and sell the Core once it's returned.

Which idea seems best?

It's dead mate, no two ways about it. Plus i'd have to get rid of the HDD, which has a lot of data i'd really like to keep.

I woud go for option 1 or option 3 if you can't live without your 360 for a few weeks.

Option 2 has flaws.
a) If you buy one and it has HDMI, pray that they don't spot this missing on your knackered one because the box will state HDMI (that's if you plan on using the box from the new one).
b) If they look at the faulty one and notice the manufacturing date, you'll look like a muppet.
3) I can't be sure without checking mine but there is a good chance the serial number is also on the box so again, you'd look a muppet if they checked it.

ahh its dead. just wondered if it was red ringed.

(you can transfer all your hdd stuff anyway, certain retail stores let you keep your hdd till you have transferred all the stuff)

I'm thinking 3 is the best option, as I quite like my lead over a few people here and would like to keep it for a bit longer :p

how can you afford anything out of the student loan, mine all goes on fees and housing (with about £150 left over i believe) or do you get grants?

if you mind me asking of course :)

He might be fortunate enough to have his fees paid for him by the government and still qualify for a full student loan. I did back in the day when I was at uni.

As for the OPs dilemma.

1) If you can go without it, then this is the best option, but could be a few weeks before you can use it again.
2) Flawed I'm afraid. The serial numbers are recorded on the retailers systems and when you return an item or trade it in they check this against the stock they have sold. It will show up that the item and the receipt don't match and you will look silly.
3) Seems like a good option if you have the cash spare. Then you can recoup your cash, or some of it when the old one is returned fixed.

Id say just send your current one back to MS and wait for it back, im sure you can manage without one for the time it will take to turn it round. If you opt for choice number 3 you could loose money with depreciation, you will be paying for them to fix it / delivery and you wont get the money you paid for the core back.

I'm on a placement this year and only qualify for the most basic student loan. How any student manages to survive on that I'll never know, it's shocking.

As for the options I'd go for option 1 since this seams like the easiest option. But then I've got games I haven't fully played on other platforms to keep me occupied while the 360 is repaired. If you really need a 360 in the meantime option 3 sounds like a winner.

Be careful then, if they find out you aren't at uni and they gave you a loan they reserve the right to recall it with a weeks notice.

Where'd you learn this info from? I'm in the same boat - hoping that my student loan gets put into my bank account before the uni processes my withdrawal notice.

Not sure if this is related but my girlfriend had hers paid in about 3 weeks ago and they realised they'd paid her double the amount she should have so they gave her notice and took half of it back.
