Declaring imports?

Back in the days of £1:$2 I bought a MacBook Pro in NYC, and then used in the California for the rest of the month's holiday.

Brought it back in my hand luggage, with the box and receipt in the suitcase. No questions asked. If there'd been any questions it would have been obvious that it was a US spec MBP (as the keyboard is different), but I guess they don't know that you purchased it on this trip not that you bought it on a previous trip and paid the import duties already.

Same with an iPad back when they were released in the US but not here. Bought by a colleague for me in a retail store. Used in the US for a week. Hand luggage, and used on the plane, with the box in the hold luggage. No questions asked. Again, whilst it was obvious that the iPad hadn't been released yet in the UK, it's not obvious whether you've just bought it on this trip or whether you've imported it and paid the duty already.

Yeah you're supposed to declare it, if you then walk through the "Nothing to declare" customs section and get randomly checked they might well ask why it has a US plug on it.
LOL

If you took your UK laptop to the US with you then you would have fitted a US plug or adaptor so you could charge it while your over there...;)
