Think I've been clocked by a speed camera van this am going about 55 on a 40 rural road. Have been on the speed awareness course 2 years ago, also doing 52 on a 40 rural road. Assuming the letter comes through and get 3 points, do I need to inform my insurance company and have my insurance go up for this year? (Renewed a few weeks ago). Thanks.

I thought most policies have a condition that you inform your insurer of any change in circumstances. If you don't they could invalidate your policy opening you to driving without insurance and loss of the vehicle. I wouldn't risk not telling them as any excuse they can find to not pay out they will take.
Andi.

Having said that....from Admirals own web page. Probably best to check your specific insurer.

Tell us at RENEWAL about...

Penalty points - if you or any named drivers receive a fixed penalty, motoring conviction or are disqualified during your policy term you must tell your insurer at renewal, using the DVLA conviction code. You must also declare attending any driver awareness courses. You don't need to mention parking fines.

Yes you have to tell them at renewal as that's the longest period of time you can realistically go without needing to contact them, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't also tell them when it happens.

It's like saying you only need to inform them of any changes to address on renewal. They'll want to know ASAP, as they're going to be offering a service based on the info you submitted, therefore any changes are going to make that differ somewhat.

You're getting shafted if you've got points.. do you really want to risk a null and void policy because you wanted to save a few quid?

Yeah, that's not so much of a worry paying what'll probably be hopefully a few hundred quid extra for insurance for the year.

More worried about being charged 100% of weekly income (or 150% if I'm unlucky) for a speeding fine.

Realise it's a speeding fine, but that seems a massive jump from the £100 charged before (if you have a decent job).

First time I got caught speeding was a straight road going through flat open heathland and this time similar again. Can't help but feel this is using speeding fines to make up for funding shortfalls for the police.

Yeah I don't agree with this automated fine sustem at all. It's wrong and should be abolished.

No you don't. Find another insurer that aren't trying circumvent the system that was put in place to give people a chance of 're-education' and avoid penalty points. If you get points then yes you have to declare it.

Most of the decent insurers already are aware that 3 points probably means you have been 'caught' before.

You do if asked. It is always better not to keep a 'change of circumstances' secret as it might invalidate the policy, no need to give them any opportunity to leave you without insurance cover.

I say use your common sense - IF you were unlucky enough to have to claim, would you want to hand your insurers anything, which they might be able to use to get out paying you?

I have always told them whenever anything changes - fitted an end can - tell them, get 3 points - tell them, peel off stickers - tell them! Fair enough, they might slap you with an admin fee, but I'd rather cough up that, than face not being paid in the event of an accident.

Just my 2p

Plus 1.

I can't figure why folks speed in todays traffic, usually folks who pass me (and many do) gain little, I'm usually right behind them at the next set of lights or delay in traffic.

Call your insurer, I've seen in the past where people have checked and the insurer have said we don't care until renewal.
