Dedicated physx

As you can see I have 2x480. Is it worth squeezing an old 280 as a dedicated physx card?
No. GTX280 is too high power consumption. Don't think it's really worth getting a separate card just for PhysX considering there's only handful of games uses the feature, but if you must, try to find a 2nd hand 9800GT/GTS250, or if you want a bit more performance, then a 2nd hand GTX460 I guess.

I already have two 280s sitting on my shelf, no extra out lay. Not bothered about power, just will 950w do it?
Not sure what kind of max power consumption on the card as Physix, but considering you already got two GTX480 in SLI, I wouldn't risk it. And then there's also the heat issue with 3 hot running cards.

You'd better off use the extra watts remains for overclocking the GTX480...much more benefitual all around for games in general.

Don't listen to these noobs. Do it. Dedicate PhysX to it. Play games with the nvidia only feature and enjoy. Screw worries!!!!!!!!
If you are so "PRO", then why are you using a 1200W PSU with for your 6990+6970 instead of using a 950W PSU, like you are advising the OP use his two GTX480 and one GTX280 with?

No Logic in what you have just said.

IF the PSU cant cope it will trip & then he will know & can take the 280 out.

Normally I'd say go for it and with a 280, you'd get great performance for physx but your motherboard nerfs the bandwidth to your sli setup if you use the 3rd slot. So I'd advise not to.

Surely sli 480 is powerfull enough to run physx as well as render in game?

I wasnt aware of the fact that if you have sli and want physx one of the cards is dedicated to that?

Would be a little bit dissapointing if true?

You seem to be quoting the word "PRO" yet no one used it? You are advising him not to make use of his 280s that he has lying around. I am saying do it. If it has problems, then he can stop. If he loses performance, he can stop. Until then, climb back in your hole with your four year old PC and stop giving advice on things you don't understand

FYI, I have a 1250W, not a 1200W PSU because I can afford it and I wanted to futureproof. I have also run a dedicated PhysX card with ATI cards with extremely positive results

now now ladies calm down ;)
I agree with BadBoy.... Try it what have u got to loose ? ure psu should be ok but its going to be a warm system if you dont like the result or u get a performance drop take the card back out.

With regards to the PSU quote some might ask why i have a 850W psu when i could have got away with a 650........... always over engineer things as best u can is my view. the only advise i give with PSU's is buy the best you can afford you really do pay for what you get with PSU's :D

GTX280 is fine - theres currently no game out where using a GTX280 for PhysX will be a bottleneck over a faster card.

The 480 SLI setup should however handle any physx game out currently or in the near future with ease... however there is one reason to use a dedicated card for PhysX over a 480 SLI setup - doing PhysX and rendering on the same GPU with SLI seems to result in some minor stuttering issues - nothing that big a problem but undeniably a dedicated GPU doing PhysX is smoother even when theres not always a performance difference.

^^ Thats not actually correct - you will get better results with a dedicated card for PhysX even if the raw performance numbers aren't better - also nothing out even Mafia 2 atm that will struggle on a 280.

Now who's was the jerk that with the first sentense into the thread insulting people calling them "noobs"? Forum is a place for people to post their opinions and have discussions, and people don't agree most of the time. But charging in here calling people "noobs" just because their opinions are different to you? That sure is rude and immature.

These are the facts:
i) Even if his PSU can handle it, it still doesn't change the fact the GTX280 is a high power consumption/hot-running card
ii) The temp 'could' become an issue for the OP, with 3 hot cards in his PC
iii) Overclocking the pair of GTX480 is more benefitual than having a PhysX card for games in general
iv) No point adding a PhysX card for adding's sake right now and giving energy provider extra money, unless he already have games at hand that he wants to play which actually uses PhysX
