Deep sea mining

This is a new level of Meism for Lightbulbguy.

'Ah well as long as the human species survives long enough for me to have my nice stuff and then die, screw anybody who follows and any other species."
You're off the mark as usual and have missed the point being made.

The fundamental point here is about human importance. I happen to believe we are not important at all. Does that mean im going to go and kill myself tomorrow, no of course not. Im here living my life as everyone else is.

Im presenting a perfectly logical perspective which you can't see because you don't possess a logical mind.

Straight out the Putin playbook that one.

Not me-ism, just existential nihilism

Agreed.

Do you disagree with these statements?

1. Good and evil are nebulous, and values addressing such are the product of nothing more than social and emotive pressures. (Ethical nihilism)

2. Life has no intrinsic meaning or value (Existential nihilism)

Because they seem pretty spot on to me.

Which then logically leads to the conversation here. If life has no implicit meaning, then why do we bother making things more difficult for ourselves trying to preserve it or prevent change in our environment?

It is ultimate absolute logic which is why I like it.

Doesn't mean we can't decide to do things and make changes. But lets not kid ourselves - we are doing it for us, not for 'the planet'. If the planet had a conscious it might well prefer just to have green plants on it and nothing else.

I think the places they are exploring are basically under water deserts, so damage will be minimal. But the problem is when other, less caring nations start doing it, like China.

Also from the BBC:

As wind energy has grown in popularity, reports of birds killed by wind turbines have become more common. Few studies have investigated the phenomenon, but estimates suggest that between 10,000 and 100,000 birds are killed by turbine blade strikes annually in the UK.

I believe the consensus is that a lot of hotter places will get hotter and a lot of colder places will get colder? And that habitatal. Zone will get smaller? Not entirely sure that's true. But that's what I read last.

It'll happen so fast we (humans) won't be able to cope. There will be massive displacement, wars on resources etc etc.

Its probably a good thing that population is heading for a peak very soon.

I do partly agree with Dan in that "it doesn't matter" because if you're atheist nothing really does. But, myself, just from a illogical "I want to live this life" I do want to enjoy it.

No, it doesn't matter.. But following that, nothing does and we might as well have ww3 and be done with it.

So although it doesn't matter. And life will live on.. It also does matter. Because I'm not gonna commit suicide.

But then.. Biodiversity Destruction, climate change etc etc aren't going to stop until it's unprofitable. And life will get really grim.

Personally I believe the worst case scenarios are probably going to play out. And my lifetimes ill certainly be seeing the starting effects in a real life way.
By that I mean food shortages, sea level rises, human displacement.
How often predictions made 10 years ago that were worst case.. Then become the reality.. Because.. Unknown variables etc etc

It'll be the fear of this that kicks off the trauma. Once the world accepts its coming what will happen? Will the world go even more xenophobic? Like hording in covid.

I don't worry about it. Can't do anything about it. But I do think it'll play out.
Do I care? Yes. But not enough to give up making a negative impact (ie holidays, putting my investments into green stuff etc).

Do you base a person's opinion on something on what they do for work?

Not in slightest its a random forum where **** posting is name of day. I just comment when someone is being condescending when they have no reason to be.

If Diddums was a PhD holder with specific focus on deep sea mining he could allow himself to be more pointed....but he's just a random person so saying he shouldn't have to explain to someone is just cringe.

If life has no implicit meaning, why do we make things difficult for ourselves with laws and rules vis-a-vis ethical nihilism?

True. Still not worth engaging with, imo, both mind sets are closed and irrational. You’d get more sense having a debate with a scarecrow.
Irrational is the complete opposite of what it is. Its perfect rationality and logic. What's irrational is emotion.

human displacement.
Humans have been displaced in one form or another for thousands of years.

Because there would be no control otherwise and there would be anarchy. As a collective species we tend to value stability.

Coming from you, that is beyond hilarious.

The problem comes when those statements are effectively extended with "so nothing matters, screw everything, care about nothing, so what if we destroy our environment/lives/planet/whatever".

"Absolute logic" may have it's place in interesting philosophical discussions, not so much as a justification for ******** in our own figurative front garden.
