Deepfake video conferencing fraud

I was wondering if there was a way to test for AI during a conversation, such as dropping a random unconnected word into a sentence and gauging the reaction.

Some of the people I work with are so blandly corporate that I do think I could be fooled into thinking that I was speaking to one of them on a video call.

I'm doubting the story. AI isn’t that good yet. This guy must be dumb.

To some extent perhaps, but maybe not as dumb as the finance people at Meta, Google etc.. who paid out a load of fake invoices:

This guy actually questioned it initially at least before being fooled by the confrence call... and perhaps some Asian cultural elements re: deference to superiors in the company came into play.

The AI in this case likely wasn't used for the conversation rather it was used to fake the voices/faces on the video call. LLMs often tend to just ignore spurious words so perhaps in a different context, maybe.

As I read the article the people were real; rather, their faces and voices were changed. So that sort of test would not help. Realtime voice and face changers are a quick Google away. I am unfamiliar with them so I have no idea as to their quality but this level of scammer is going to invest in the best. And webcams aren't the best cameras in the world so the quality doesn't have to be movie quality.

So the scammers used a more sophisticated program than the one that was used to turn that guy into a cat on the video call, and another program more sophisticated than the one used to disguise the voice of a crime victim on a documentary, but it was actual people doing the talking.

It seems to me that software developers have claimed the phrase Artificial Intelligence and simply use it when they bring out something fancy.
