Defective mobo or not?

Mobo: Gigabyte MA78LMT-US2H

The story so far:

Put together bits and connected up.
Installed my early copy of Windows XP Pro ( bought around 2002) onto my hard drive via optical drive.

Problems:
The board will not detect onboard sound device. Have checked CMOS and installed Gigabyte drivers etc
Windows keeps sayng it doesn't detect any sound device.

Next problem is no internet connection with which to download SP1 & 2 etc. When I run a check through CMOS, it detects an incoming signal via my cable from my main computer to the LAN but will not connect via this direct lead to my Orange Livebox. I've even tried "pairing" it with a USB wireless device with no luck. I've plugged in a Belkin USB software and wireless receiver and WEP key and it also detects and Identifies my LIvebox and a neighbours system too but still will not connect.
Now it's probably me and my stupidity but should the system still work without the Windows updates?
I notice that Windows detects that it only reads in USB1 as it says a higher speed device is connected when I plug in my external backup drive so that seems to be working ok.
The only way around the Windows update problem that I can see is to download SP1 & SP2 etc onto another machine and copy it to a DVD and install the updates that way ! Is this the best way forward?

Also is it remotely possible that I have a defective mobo?
I'll be out for most of the day so can't answer any questions until I get home but, I'd appreciate any suggestions or checks that I could try when I get home.

Thanks in advance.

No sound and no internet does sound like the mobo's drivers are not installed correctly. Download the latest version of the mobo drivers using another PC and copy onto a pendrive and install them post the Windows install.

There are also several revisions of this mobo (according to the GB website). Make sure the drivers you're installing are appropriate for your version

Well I've got the internet connection working, now I need to sort out the sound.
I have installed Windows 7 64 bit and it works a treat. Also installed the drivers that came with board and will download any updated drivers if necessary.

Do you know anything about AHCI - I notice in my bios where is says "Onchip SATA Type"...this says Native IDE. with Onchip SATA ports 4 & 5 Type IDE.

Should this be set to AHCI ?
I Googled it and it said it must be set to AHCI before Windows XP installation, otherwise it won't work correctly - is it the same for Windows 7?

You do not need AHCI on for W7. Unless you are using W7 on an SSD.

Thanks for the reply.
I will be booting from an SSD once I have everything set up the way I want it.
Also, I actually prefer Windows XP ( stupid I know) to W7, so I will have a dual boot system.

Could you tell me when I'm likely to use "Onchip SATA ports" set IDE ?

Edit: I won't be using any IDE devices on this system ( all SATA) and if I need to, I have an IDE header for that need.
