Define: Smart Casual

I have a pair of black Huge Boss jeans that are definately jeans, and are definitely the epitome of smart casual. Although they really are very smart for jeans, smarter, I think, than the "smart" jeans that've been mentioned in this thread.

I'm sure they're very smart, but if I were invited to an event where the dress code was smart casual, I would still not be wearing them. I am a bit of a clothes snob though :)

You havn't seen these, they're basically just thick trousers that are cut like jeans, they are pretty swish, and smart (they were smarter before I wore them a billion times)

I'ma go take a picture :p

OK, I'm willing to change my mind! I have some jean cut roderick charles trousers which I would say are borderline smart but they're not denim.

smart casual to me: Darkish jeans, white trainers (clean though, not a bogging old wrecked pair), and whatever cardigan/t-shirt combination i have thats clean at the time (usually grey with a white/black tshirt). always got away with it.

Sorry but no chance. Dark jeans and White Trainers.

The last guy we had apply for a job where I work wore black trousers and a black shirt and white trainers. The letter that goes out to applicants says "please dress Smart Causal" Needless to say the min he walked in the first thing we noticed was the white trainers. Straight away that set a bad impression.

You might be able to get away with some jet black trainers. But I wouldnt recommend it.

White trainers and dark clothes do not = smart in any way shape or form in my eyes

Depends on how nice, 'somewhere nice' is. Smart casual seems to be like beauty, and in the eye of the beholder.

For a professional situation, I would class smart casual, as trousers, with a trouser cut, and not jeans/denim or items of the same cut. So chinos, moleskins etc.

A long sleeved, collared shirt, with a jacket or smart jumper.

I would not feel comfortable that anything less would be sure to fall into the beholders definition of smart casual.

I really find that sort of thing funny. I went for a job interview recently and, as I said, I'm not one for dressing smart. I scrub up; trousers, dark trainers, shirt, smart jumper, but they seem to get them hump over something - maybe because I'm not wearing a suit. What difference does it make as to whether you're good at the job or not?!

If I went for an interview and didn't get in because of how I dressed, but also received a letter to that effect, you could expect one back detailing every single little thing I didn't like about the company in my short visit! You can bet there'd be a lot as well.

It doesn't. But it does affect people's first impressions of you. And in a job interview, the ability to make a good first impression is vital, which often means making the effort and looking like you have made the effort to dress smartly.

Well to me its the first impression thing sure they might be great but my first impression is what the hell is this guy thinking.

Especially where I work the company wants to present a employee to a customer as a professional not some scrub in a tracksuit.

Your first impression may be your last :D

In the case I mentioned I was correct the guy didnt know squat about the job didnt have a clue what he was applying for so there ya go.

nice jeans, but IMO most definitely casual

Dressing appropriately for an important occasion, whether it's a job interview, wedding, or funeral for example, conveys respect for the situation and the people involved. It sets the impression that you are taking it seriously, respectful of those present and that you have judged the situation correctly.
