As a retired design engineer I was excited to get my first 3D printer (Creativity Hi) for Xmas.
Now possessing the two attributes of enthusiasm and ignorance I am hoping this forum can help me with my first problem.

I was printing a component that was in essence a square tube. Not sure if it’s relevant but dimensionally it was 30mm square with 3mm walls and 200mm long.

It was approx 25% through the cycle when one end became detached from the heated bedplate and started to curl upward like a banana.

I suspect it could be something to do with the heat settings but would appreciate any guidance from more experienced members of this forum.

Firstly what material were you printing with, PLA?

The problem with square/rectangle parts is they can have issues with warping due to the squared nature of the corners. A big brim can help, 10 or 20mm, might stop it from warping. An open printer should really be in a place where there isn't a breeze as that can aid in warping. Raising the heated bed temperature by 5 degrees might also help.
 
I agree with everything ElliorR just said. Those 3 things are the primary reason you will be getting lift. I usually just use mouse ears on corners of large objects to help with that just because I hate having to get a brim off around the whole thing afterwards :D

Subsequently to sending the post I spent a few hours on YouTube and gained a lot of additional information which together with your inputs, puts me in a much more informed position.

In answer to ElliorR’s question, the filament is PLA.

The take aways from my surfing and your comments suggest:
1. Clean/degrease the bed, which I hadn’t been doing.
2. Avoid square/sharp corners and replace with radii
3. Play with the parameters for the brim layer with respect to thickness and temperature.
4. Employ ‘Mouse Ears’ around problematic areas.
