Hi, I currently work as a computer programmer but have a hankering to move into a more hands-on field of work where I can create things, off the top of my head this is the first thing I came up with and found this course on google:

http://www.soton.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/2012/electromechanical_engineering.shtml

What are peoples thoughts on this degree/course and subject area?

I like the kind of things/projects on hackaday but obviously I would be looking to work and make a living in it as well once qualified.

I read B(Eng.) Electronic Engineering 1998-2002. Expect a fair amount of hardware engineering using those ancient Vax machines, programming in C and Assembly :-D To make it even more tough, the assembler / board is different in year 3 to year 2, so it's somewhat like having to relearn some of Assembly. A fair bit of maths too, although that dies out towards year 3. Year 1 is more general engineering, where you'll do a bit of CAD, mechanics, microelectronics, computer sciences. You get a couple of own-choice modules every year too (2 out of 12). IIRC, the only modules you have to take in all 3 years is Analogue & Digital Electronics, as that's where you do most of your hands-on circuit stuff and some theory beforehand using a computer program called Matlab. Expect to use Mac computers almost as often as PCs, and of course Vax :-)

This is the kind of thing I think I might've wanted to go into had my college not repeatedly dropped the physics A-Level.

Just to list some of my mandatory modules for Electronic Eng:

- Engineering Maths
- Circuit Analysis
- Analogue & Digital Electronics
- Microelectronics
- Team Assignments
- Computer Techology
- Development in C
- Telecommunication & Signal Processing
- Industrial Control
- Fields & Energy Conversion

Some will likely be different if you're taking Electromechanical, but I suspect that at least your year 1 will be very much like my year 1 as I took Mechanics as a module.

yoou wont be doing much hands on...

look at apprenticeships or jobs with training schemes if thats what you want

your degree will be spent in the libary with your head in maths books
