Recovering a full 640gb on a mechanical HDD will take hours/overnight, I use a program called 'recover my files' that works well.

Sounds like NTFS security descriptors got smushed somehow ... can you try to login as Administrator (if you have one)
 
Sounds like you just need to take ownership of the drive, which can be found on the security tab of the properties menu. You need to click the 'Advanced' button then go to the 'Owner' tab, click your user account and don't forget to tick the box 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' before clicking OK.

You will know you've done this right because it will take a while to apply all the permissions to each and every file and folder. Now you can go back to the secuirty tab and give yourself full control (again be sure to tick 'Replace all child object permissions...')
