Basically it is emulating 2 drives off a single SATA connector -- pretty cool, but explains why a driver is required. They will probably sell quite a lot of these!

Given that the device is intended as an upgrade to existing (older) laptops, that would defeat the purpose. Most modern laptops have mSATA slots, so for those people it's easy to add an mSATA SSD while leaving their existing spinning hard drive. This new WD device is for people without mSATA slots.

It's pretty cool to see manufacturers takings risks like this. Slightly non-standard but hopefully a great solution for lots of people.

It is using a single drive connector, which was never designed to support two drives behind it. Effectively one physical device, with one physical connector, is behaving like two devices (which in reality, it is: a separate SSD and separate spinning drive). So they have somehow made it possible to have two separate devices, using a standard connector that was never intended to support two devices, and yet without the driver you still get full access to the SSD (access to the HDD requires the driver). Not a good idea to buy 2 in 1 because if the SSD had died, you need to copy all the full 1TB HDD to other HDD before return the SSD/HDD back to manufacturing. Don't like this idea. I prefer SSD/HDD in separator way.
