i think its a sound problem update your drivers and try the on board sound if that fails lower your sounds setting see if that helps

Theres a known problem with CS source and the latest nvidia drivers (the ones that make use of dual core) that affects dual core users. I downgraded to 78.05 and have been crash free since

Think i may have solved my problem, I have re-installed my ac3 filter codec's and that seems to have solved the problem I was having. Played CS:S for 8 hours with no crash, my problem may have been the same as the preblems you guys are experiencing.

I also have a Dual Core X2 4400, with a 7800GTX, although i know my graphics card can handle all the HDR in the HDR Supported Maps, i turn it off, just to avoid the crashing, im not sure if it helped completely, but i usually crash on maps like cs_militia and de_nuke, the sound just loops constantly, and crashes the PC completely, meaning i have no choice but to hit the reset button, it doesn't just crash to desktop, its the whole system. :(

I the same problem. For me it was because the sound card was located in a PCI slot far from the northbridge. Moving the sound card up closer to the graphics card solved the problem. It is a problem affecting sound blaster cards and is documented on the steam forums.

It doesnt always happen in game, just after i cleaned the system out for dust etc and put my soundcard in a new slot (no. 3....it was in like 6 or 7) i ran 2 stress tests, then i opened console to change some "cl_"s and then it crashed.

If you've got a sound card, have you disabled on board sound in your bios, as they can conflict if both are on.

I tried disabling my onboard sound but it makes no difference. The problem seems to be the nvidia drivers and dual core :(

im ok. getting the odd LARGE laggy stutter, but my favourites are nowhere to be seen (hlsw fixes that really). The biggest problem however, is that my framerate will dive from the 100's to the high 20's - low 30's @1280x1024 2xAA. Which for somebody with a 2.9ghz opteron and an x800gto2 just isn't on:mad:

Cheers I'll give this ago tonight when I get home from work, god I dislike working this late, well iam not really working at the moment :D

OK it kept happening again last night, even when i re-installed my codecs again, anyhow so I start to play around and think I may have another solution, if you have dual core, ok here goes;

1) Load the steam application

2) Set the affinity of steam to cpu 1

3) Load cs:s or what ever game (Don't go any further than the main menu)

4) Ctrl+ALt+Del out of it and go to assign the affinity.

5) The game should be set to affinity cpu 1 like the steam app.

6) Change the affinity of the game process to cpu 0

7) Go back into the game and join a server.

That worked for 4 hours last night, trying it again later tonight, if it works again I let you know. Give it a try yourself and let us know if it works for you guys as well)
