best option would be pretty much any dslr plus a good macro lens (e.g. Tamron 90mm f2.8).
I would imagine that lighting is also important for his needs.

The best macro that I have used (of course barring a DSLR) has been the SONY DSC-F717 - the macro on that is extremely impressive.
